YouTube Premium subscribers on Android now have early access to two experimental playback features: Auto Speed and On-the-go.

Google is gradually enabling these features within the YouTube Android app. Both are exclusive to Premium members, currently experimental, and turned off by default.

Auto Speed adjusts playback speed dynamically on YouTube

Auto Speed is an enhanced version of the traditional 2x playback speed option on YouTube. Instead of using fixed-speed modes, it automatically adjusts video playback speed dynamically, tailoring it to the content. This is especially useful for videos like cooking tutorials, where some steps may need to be sped through, while others require slower pacing.

Currently, Auto Speed works only with English-language videos and is not available on all content. If a video does not support it, the ”Auto” option won’t appear in the speed settings. When available, the ”Auto” toggle appears alongside the usual speed controls for easy access.

On-the-go mode adapts YouTube interface for mobile viewing

Inspired by YouTube Music’s design, On-the-go modifies the video player interface for users while moving. It can activate automatically or be enabled manually. In automatic mode, the app detects at least 60 seconds of user motion and then offers to switch to a simplified interface designed for easier use on the go.

Users can also enable On-the-go manually through video settings by selecting the relevant option.

Currently, On-the-go is unstable and available to a limited number of users. Its advantages over existing YouTube Premium controls remain unclear. According to Google’s screenshots, this mode simplifies access to the timeline and playback button, rearranges control elements, and highlights the download button.

Both Auto Speed and On-the-go are Android-only currently. Auto Speed is open for testing but may have bugs, while On-the-go is limited to select users.

These features are experimental with no guarantee of permanence. Premium users can try them until April 27, after which Google might end the trial period.

Google’s focus on smarter playback experiences reflects a broader industry trend toward adaptive video controls tailored to viewers’ context. Apple and Netflix are also exploring adaptive streaming features. The success of Auto Speed and On-the-go will depend on how well they accommodate diverse viewing habits and content types. It remains to be seen if these tools will expand beyond English videos and Android or inspire similar innovations on other platforms.
