Xiaomi appears to be winding the clock back on its foldables. After skipping a follow-up to the Mix Fold 4 in 2025, the company may finally be lining up a new model for early July – and it may not carry the Mix Fold name at all. If the latest rumor holds, Xiaomi’s next book-style foldable could arrive as the Xiaomi 17 Fold, which would be a tidy bit of branding and a not-so-subtle link to the company’s main phone lineup.

The timing is the first surprise. The device had reportedly been expected to launch alongside the Xiaomi 17 Max next month, but that plan is said to have slipped. That kind of delay is hardly unusual for foldables, a category where launch windows tend to drift as manufacturers juggle new hinges, bigger sensors, and battery packaging that still behaves like a puzzle box.

Why Xiaomi may drop the Mix Fold name

The naming clue comes from a database listing for model number 26023PN08C with the codename ”pecan”. Xiaomi’s Mix Fold devices have traditionally used ”PX” in their model codes, while ”PN” is usually seen on the company’s numbered flagships such as the Xiaomi 17. That makes the rumor more interesting than a simple launch-date tweak: Xiaomi may be trying to fold its premium foldable into the same family as its candy-bar flagships, which is a neat way to make the lineup feel more coherent – and a little less like a side project.

Xiaomi 17 Fold expected specifications

On the hardware side, the current rumor points to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. That would put Xiaomi right in the usual top-tier foldable race, where raw performance is table stakes and the real differentiator is whether the rest of the phone can keep up without turning into a pocket-sized radiator.

The camera setup sounds ambitious too. Earlier reports suggest a 200-megapixel main camera using Samsung’s S5KHP5 sensor, backed by a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera with the OV50M sensor and another 50-megapixel auxiliary camera, also using the OV50M. Up front, the foldable could use a 16-megapixel selfie camera with the OV16F sensor. Xiaomi has clearly learned the lesson that a foldable cannot survive on novelty alone; buyers now expect flagship-grade cameras, not just a fancy crease and a good excuse to show off at a coffee shop.

What to watch before July

For now, the leak trail is still thin. But if the launch window is really only weeks away, more details should surface soon, and the bigger question is whether Xiaomi uses this model to reset its foldable naming scheme for good or keeps the Mix Fold branding alive in some other form. Either way, Samsung, Honor, and other foldable rivals will be watching closely; Xiaomi has a habit of making the category a little more crowded the moment it decides to show up.
