For organizations that rely on sensitivity labels and data loss prevention rules, ”confidential” is supposed to be non-negotiable. Last month a Microsoft 365 bug showed how brittle that promise can be when an AI assistant is involved.

What happened

Microsoft confirmed a code issue in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat that caused the assistant to pull in and summarize emails tagged as confidential. The problem – tracked internally as CW1226324 – was first detected on Jan. 21 and affected Copilot’s ”work tab” chat feature. Copilot Chat was reportedly pulling messages from users’ Sent Items and Drafts folders even when those messages carried sensitivity labels that should have blocked automated access. Microsoft began rolling out a fix in early February and says it is monitoring deployment and contacting some affected customers to verify the patch.

Why this matters beyond a patch

This is not just an engineering hiccup. It highlights a deeper tension: AI assistants don’t neatly inherit the security model of the systems they sit on. Sensitivity labels and DLP rules were designed for human workflows and automated scanners; when you add a content-aware assistant that indexes, summarizes and synthesizes, you introduce new access paths that existing controls may not cover.

For businesses, the costs are reputational and regulatory as much as technical. A single unexpected summary of a supposedly private draft can expose negotiation details, personal data, or legal strategy. Microsoft says it’s fixing the code path that caused the mishap, but the vendor hasn’t disclosed how many organizations were affected – which makes it hard for security teams to measure risk or reassure stakeholders.

How other vendors and enterprises are responding

Enterprises have already been cautious about third‑party AI assistants. In previous years many firms blocked consumer chatbots from employee machines and restricted integrations that send corporate data to external services. Vendors selling enterprise AI respond with administrative toggles, model‑access controls and DLP integrations that promise to keep sensitive stores off‑limits – but those controls are only as reliable as the code paths that enforce them.

The practical takeaway: defenders often need to treat AI features as a new category of subsystem. That means not only applying sensitivity labels and DLP rules, but also validating how assistant features access mail, files and drafts, reviewing logs for unexpected reads, and running focused audits after any update that touches the assistant stack.

What Microsoft and customers should do next

Microsoft patched the immediate code issue, which is the right first move. But fixing the symptom isn’t the same as fixing the architectural risk. Vendors should provide transparent, machine‑readable proofs that assistant requests respect sensitivity and DLP boundaries – for example, event logs that show why an item was or wasn’t accessible to an assistant, and administrative controls that let security teams quarantine assistant access to particular mailboxes or folders.

Administrators should assume AI features create fresh attack surfaces. Practical steps to limit exposure include temporarily disabling Copilot Chat access to mailboxes until you can validate the patch; auditing Sent Items and Drafts access patterns; tightening label enforcement policies; and asking vendors for clear deployment telemetry so you can verify fixes at scale. If your compliance team needs more certainty, insist on a timeline for independent verification or certification of the enforcement logic.

The bigger lesson

AI will continue to be folded into the enterprise productivity stack because the productivity gains are real. But each integration changes the security calculus. The Copilot incident is a reminder that labels and DLP were never a plug‑and‑play guarantee when system behavior changes – and that organizations should audit and test those guarantees every time an AI feature is introduced or updated.

Trust in enterprise AI will be earned in the details: transparent logs, predictable enforcement, and fast, visible remediation when things go wrong. Until vendors and customers build those norms together, ”confidential” will remain an aspiration more than an assured state.
