Toyota is finally plugging Apple Car Key into its lineup, starting with the 2026 RAV4 and setting up Lexus to follow later. The catch is familiar: you get one free year, then Toyota’s Remote Connect subscription kicks in at $15 per month if you want to keep locking, unlocking, and starting the car from an iPhone or Apple Watch.
That alone puts Toyota behind a growing crowd, but also firmly inside the club. Apple’s digital key system is already live across more than 30 automakers, and Toyota’s move narrows the gap with brands such as BMW, Genesis, Kia, Hyundai, Lotus, Mercedes, and Volvo. For a company as large as Toyota, this looked overdue rather than ambitious.
How Toyota’s Digital Key works on the RAV4
Toyota says the feature lives inside Apple Wallet and can also be shared with up to five additional drivers. Supported Apple devices start at the iPhone 11 and Apple Watch Series 6, while some Google and Samsung phones will work too, though Toyota did not spell out which ones. The system is tied to the latest Audio Multimedia setup, so this is not a universal Toyota perk overnight.
That detail matters because the 2026 RAV4 becomes Toyota’s first model with full Apple Car Key integration, while other 2026 Toyotas – including the Camry, Grand Highlander, Prius, Tacoma, Crown, and Crown Signia – still depend on Toyota app-based Digital Key access. In other words: the flagship rollout is real, but it is still a rollout, not a blanket switch.

Toyota and Lexus are still splitting the rollout
Lexus is next in line, with the 2026 Lexus ES expected to get the upgraded Digital Key later this year. Toyota’s earlier plan appears to be playing out in stages, which is typical for automakers trying to avoid turning every connected-car feature into a compatibility headache on day one.
There is also a broader competitive pressure here. Phone-based car access has become a quiet status symbol in the premium market, and Toyota’s late arrival leaves it chasing rivals that have had years to normalize the feature. The upside for Toyota is that once the plumbing is in place, Digital Key can be rolled across more models without making drivers carry yet another plastic fob just to go buy groceries.
What comes after the 2026 RAV4
The obvious question is whether Toyota keeps the same subscription model everywhere or uses Apple Car Key as a lure for higher trim levels and bundled services. If the 2026 RAV4 is the test case, expect Toyota to treat digital access less like a gimmick and more like a recurring-revenue feature with wheels attached.
