Subaru has launched the Getaway, an electric SUV packing 420 horsepower, making it the most powerful production vehicle in the company’s history. Combining performance, off-road capabilities, and room for seven passengers, the Getaway marks Subaru’s bold move into the electric SUV segment.

Traditionally known for sporty gas-powered models like the WRX STI, Subaru is rewriting its image in the EV era. The Getaway’s dual electric motors produce a combined 313 kW (420 hp), propelling the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds – a pace that beats many sports cars. Yet it doesn’t sacrifice utility, comfortably seating up to seven people with ample cargo space.

Built on the same platform as the Toyota Highlander EV – a product of the Subaru-Toyota partnership – the Getaway tweaks the system to boost output from Toyota’s 388 hp to 420 hp. It also sports a more rugged, aggressive design typical of Subaru’s all-wheel-drive lineup.

Subaru Getaway dimensions and interior space

The Getaway measures 5050 mm (about 199 inches) long and 1989 mm (78 inches) wide. Its interior offers three rows of seats, with the option for second-row captain’s chairs. Subaru claims even passengers around six feet tall will find the third row surprisingly comfortable, a rarity in this size class.

Cargo space is generous: 1,291 liters (about 45.5 cubic feet) with the third row folded, exceeding competitors like the Kia EV9. With all seats up, there’s still 450 liters (16 cubic feet) available for luggage.

Technology and comfort features in the Subaru Getaway electric SUV

Inside, the cabin features a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, alongside USB-C ports for all three rows of seats.

Comfort is prioritized with ventilated seats and heating across all three rows, plus a panoramic roof that brightens the cabin. Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite comes standard, incorporating driver assists like lane keep and automatic emergency braking.

Battery and charging specs for the Subaru Getaway

The Getaway is powered by a 95.8 kWh battery delivering a range of over 483 kilometers (300 miles). A smaller 77 kWh battery option is slated for 2027. For the US market, Subaru is adopting the Tesla-compatible NACS charging port, granting access to Tesla Supercharger stations – a significant convenience advantage.

Fast charging tops out at 150 kW, enabling a battery recharge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. A clever touch: the LED daytime running lights visually indicate the charging status while plugged in.

Off-road capabilities and towing capacity of the Subaru Getaway

True to Subaru’s off-road heritage, the Getaway features all-wheel drive with a 211 mm (8.3 inches) ground clearance. The X-Mode traction control system helps tackle tough terrain, and the SUV can tow up to 1,588 kilograms (around 3,500 pounds).

Pricing and release date for the Subaru Getaway electric SUV

The starting price is expected to hover around €46,900 ($51,000), positioning it against rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9. Subaru aims to start deliveries before the end of 2026.

With Subaru entering the electric SUV arena boasting serious power, roomy interiors, and genuine off-road capabilities, the Getaway stakes a unique claim among EVs. Watch for how consumers weigh Subaru’s rugged image and Toyota’s engineering under the skin against established EV players focused on luxury or pure tech. The inclusion of Tesla’s charging port could be a key factor in US adoption, potentially nudging Subaru beyond its traditional audience.
