Samsung has started early internal testing for its upcoming user interface update, One UI 9, based on Google’s upcoming Android 17. The initial Android 17 firmware, spotted on Samsung’s servers as version BZC5 for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, marks the beginning of the company’s development cycle for this major software upgrade, although significant visual changes are not yet visible.

Samsung is known for quickly adapting and customizing Android updates with its One UI skin. It typically starts working on new versions many months before public releases. While the Galaxy S26 series ships with One UI 8.5, which began beta testing late last year, Samsung is already progressing internally on One UI 9 powered by the latest Android 17 Beta 2 code. This internal build currently shows minimal user-facing changes, reflecting its early-stage testing status.

Android 17 is a major software development kit (SDK) update introducing important API changes focusing heavily on improving system efficiency and security. Key new features include:

  • Support for Versatile Video Coding (VVC)
  • Standardized loudness controls across third-party camera and media apps
  • Smoother transitions within apps

These enhancements suggest that One UI 9 will emphasize performance, stability, and security improvements rather than major design overhauls.

While this internal build is promising for early adopters and developers interested in Android 17 on Samsung devices, it does not indicate a public beta release is imminent. Samsung’s internal testing phases usually last weeks or months before opening to select users. The One UI 9 beta is unlikely to begin before mid-year, following the anticipated official launch of Android 17, expected around late June.

Before the One UI 9 rollout, Samsung will likely expand One UI 8.5 availability to older Galaxy devices, broadening the user base benefiting from the current generation enhancements. For Galaxy S26 owners, the wait for One UI 9 means expecting incremental improvements on a solid foundation, focused on under-the-hood optimization and advanced media capabilities enabled by Android 17.
