Samsung is gearing up for a significant refresh with One UI 9, its next major software update tied to Android 17, expected as early as June this year. This upgrade promises to change some of Samsung’s most prominent interface features, including its Now Bar, widgets, and Gallery app, marking a clear shift away from the familiar design language many Samsung users know.
First up, the Now Bar-a central hub for notifications, music playback, and system info-is receiving a redesign aimed at improving visual clarity. Track names will appear more prominently in the bar’s upper section during music playback, accompanied by a subtle new animation along the bar’s bottom edge. Most interestingly, a long-press gesture will soon open access to key settings, enhancing functionality without clutter.

Widgets will shed their long-standing rounded corners for sharper, more defined edges, injecting a fresh and slightly more angular aesthetic into the interface. While this change might unsettle users accustomed to soft curves, Samsung plans to offer customization options to adjust widget corner shapes-a thoughtful concession aimed at easing the transition.

Another notable update arrives in the Gallery app, where selecting images will now generate an immediate preview panel at the top, displaying thumbnails for up to 15 selected photos. This addition streamlines managing multiple images, addressing a longstanding usability gap.
These changes signal Samsung’s intent to refine the user experience subtly yet meaningfully. While these tweaks don’t completely reinvent One UI, they polish its best features and prepare the OS for Android 17’s debut. As Google accelerates Android 17’s rollout this summer, Samsung’s One UI 9 is poised to arrive shortly after, promising a smarter, cleaner interface to keep Galaxy users engaged-and possibly win over some holdouts.
