Square Enix has announced that its Octopath Traveler series has surpassed 7 million copies sold globally. This milestone was largely driven by the release of the prequel Octopath Traveler 0 in December 2025, which significantly expanded the franchise’s audience.

The original Octopath Traveler launched on Nintendo Switch in 2018 and remains the series’ strongest seller, reaching 3 million sales by September 2022. Its sequel, Octopath Traveler II, released in early 2023, added another million units to the total. Together, these titles laid the foundation for the franchise’s growing popularity.

Octopath Traveler 0, a prequel to the original game, debuted on December 4, 2025. It is a modern console and PC adaptation of the mobile title Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. The game is available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, making the series accessible across most current platforms.

To celebrate topping 7 million copies sold, Square Enix has launched discounts of up to 60% on the first two Octopath Traveler titles in digital stores. This presents an ideal entry point for new players and a chance for longtime fans to complete their collections at a discount.

The Octopath Traveler series offers a distinct take on turn-based JRPGs with its unique character-driven storytelling and HD-2D pixel art style. This visual and narrative approach sets it apart amid genre heavyweights such as Square Enix’s own Final Fantasy, as well as Pokémon and Persona. The series’ steady sales growth reflects consistent appeal in an increasingly crowded RPG market.

With Octopath Traveler 0 now broadening the franchise’s reach onto more platforms and appealing to new audience segments, key questions remain: How will Square Enix evolve the series’ signature gameplay and narrative approach? Will future entries blend the classic charm of turn-based combat with innovations to compete with modern RPG trends? The next steps for Octopath Traveler could determine whether it remains a niche favorite or emerges as a major JRPG contender on the global stage.
