Google tests AI model for 15-day cyclone forecasts
Google is testing Weather Lab, an AI cyclone model that forecasts storm paths, intensity, size and shape through 50 scenarios up to 15 days ahead.
Google is testing Weather Lab, an experimental AI system designed to forecast tropical cyclones up to 15 days ahead. The model predicts not only whether a storm will form, but also its track, intensity, size, and shape.
Instead of producing a single projected path, Weather Lab generates 50 possible scenarios for how a cyclone could develop. Google says the system uses stochastic neural networks to represent the spread of possible outcomes rather than reducing uncertainty to one line on a map.
Weather Lab is part of Google’s Earth AI platform
Google describes Weather Lab as part of Earth AI, a broader platform built around years of Earth-system modeling and Gemini’s reasoning capabilities. The same platform includes satellite-imagery tools, air-quality and pollen estimates, and wildfire analysis.
Google also highlighted WeatherNext, its global weather-forecasting model. WeatherNext uses a Functional Generative Network architecture, produces forecasts eight times faster, and supports forecast intervals as short as one hour. Google claims it improves accuracy, including for extreme weather events, but the reporting provides no benchmark methodology or independent validation for those claims.
The platform’s existing flood tools are broader in deployment. Flood Hub provides river-flood warnings up to seven days in advance across river basins in more than 100 countries, covering about 700 million people. Google separately says its flood forecasting already reaches more than 2 billion people.
Google says Maps and Search can also display hurricane warnings and storm tracks near affected areas, alongside other crisis alerts.
Weather Lab’s 15-day, multi-scenario approach is a meaningful shift from presenting cyclone forecasts as a single route, and the surrounding Earth AI tools give Google a way to connect prediction with public alerts. But it remains an experimental model, and Google has not disclosed when it will be broadly available or supplied independent evidence supporting its accuracy claims.
