Following the departure of Sora from OpenAI, Google doubled down on video generation by introducing Veo 3.1 Lite – a more affordable video generation model aimed at developers handling large volumes of content.

Veo 3.1 Lite slots below Veo 3.1 Fast in Google’s lineup, with Veo 3.1 still holding the flagship spot. Google markets Lite as its most cost-effective video generation solution, designed to keep quality and speed at a high level without the premium price tag.

The model supports both text-to-video and image-to-video generation. It outputs videos at 720p or 1080p resolutions in popular 16:9 and 9:16 aspect ratios, the latter ideal for vertical formats common on social media platforms. Despite being the ”Lite” version, its generation speed matches that of Veo 3.1 Fast.

Developers can produce video clips ranging from four to eight seconds, with pricing scaling based on clip length. Notably, Veo 3.1 Lite costs less than half the price of Veo 3.1 Fast. For context, Google is also reducing Veo 3.1 Fast’s pricing starting April 7.

Veo technology is already embedded across various Google services, including YouTube Shorts, Google Photos, Google Vids, and the Gemini app. Google also offers Flow, a standalone tool for video creation and editing powered by Veo.

The new Veo 3.1 Lite is accessible via Gemini API and Google AI Studio, providing developers a streamlined way to integrate affordable video generation into their workflows.

Integration and access through Gemini API and Google AI Studio

Developers can access Veo 3.1 Lite via Gemini API and Google AI Studio, enabling easy incorporation of cost-effective video generation into applications and services.

Google’s competitive strategy in affordable video AI tools

Google’s move to offer a cheaper video generation model follows industry trends where AI providers like OpenAI and Meta expand accessible multimodal AI tools. Veo 3.1 Lite enables small developers and startups to experiment with video AI without high costs, positioning Google to compete more directly with Apple and others entering this space.

Looking ahead, the key question is how Google will expand Veo’s capabilities and pricing tiers as video content demand grows. Will Veo 3.1 Lite drive wider adoption for short, user-generated clips? And can Google maintain performance and flexibility as competitors scale their offerings? For developers, this could become a pivotal tool in the evolving AI video ecosystem.
