FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is gearing up for a Switch 2 release, and early impressions from a freshly optimized demo presented at GDC 2026 reveal solid performance improvements. The game now targets a stable 30fps frame rate in both handheld and docked modes, with resolution reportedly close to native 1080p in handheld play. This marks a notable step forward compared to previous Switch versions and the 2025 Gamescom build, promising a more enjoyable experience on Nintendo’s hybrid system.

The demo run, lasting about 15 minutes, showed that while Elden Ring on Switch 2 won’t hit Nintendo or PC-level 60fps, it comfortably lands in the 30 to 40fps range depending on scene complexity. Polygon noted the frame rate tends to dip during demanding moments, such as weather effects while riding Torrent, but remains smooth overall. RPG Site echoed this, observing consistent 30fps performance and high resolution-even during intense open-world encounters and boss fights like Margit.

GameSpot highlighted Bandai Namco’s confidence in the build by allowing recorded gameplay from the handheld mode, a rarity for Switch 2 titles so far. Despite necessary graphical compromises, environments like Limgrave retain much of their visual appeal, balancing quality and performance well. The inclusion of a new knight-type character class for this version was also noted during docked play.

Elden Ring Switch 2 performance and visuals

While the release date for Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on Switch 2 remains unconfirmed, these previews suggest fans can expect a game closer in quality to current handheld rivals like the Steam Deck. Combined with FromSoftware’s upcoming 2026 title The Duskbloods, the studio is maintaining a strong presence in the RPG space this year.

With the Switch 2 offering a leap in hardware capabilities, Elden Ring’s optimized build points to Nintendo seriously challenging the dominance of Steam Deck and other mobile gaming PCs. The question now is whether this performance consistency will hold in the full release.
