Apple is gearing up to transform Siri with iOS 27 by allowing users to connect third-party AI services to the voice assistant, according to Bloomberg insider Mark Gurman. The update is expected to be unveiled at Apple’s WWDC event on June 8.

Beyond simply integrating more advanced AI capabilities, Apple plans to ”open” Siri to external AI models through special extensions. This means that multiple AI services, not just ChatGPT, will be able to handle user queries if their apps support this kind of integration.

Currently, when Siri can’t answer a question, it routes the request to ChatGPT. In iOS 27, this fallback will remain, but users will have the option to choose which AI service processes their queries – whether it’s an alternative AI model or a brand-new app.

Siri with third-party AI integrations in iOS 27

This shift also hints at a new revenue stream for Apple. Instead of relying on exclusive partnerships like its current deal with OpenAI, Apple intends to monetize through subscriptions on AI services via the App Store.

How Siri’s third-party AI integrations will work in iOS 27

If confirmed, this will be one of the most significant changes to Siri in years, giving the assistant more flexibility and better positioning it against rapidly improving AI rivals such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Microsoft’s AI integrations across Windows and Office.

Impact of Siri AI integrations on iPhone and iPad users

Apple’s move to open Siri could redefine the AI assistant landscape on iPhones and iPads. The big question now is how smoothly these third-party integrations will work and whether users will embrace managing multiple AI backends. This could spark a new era where the AI experience on iOS is as customizable as the apps themselves.
