Apple has rolled out new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with its latest M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, aiming to push performance higher for creative professionals, developers, and AI enthusiasts. Building on the earlier introduction of the base M5 chip, these refreshed laptops combine a novel chip architecture with faster storage and enhanced connectivity, addressing the growing demands of intensive workflows.
The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips mark a shift in Apple’s silicon design by adopting a Fusion Architecture that merges two dies into one unified system on a chip. This consolidation tightly integrates the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, media engine, memory controller, and Thunderbolt support, streamlining performance across complex tasks.
Each chip features an 18-core CPU arrangement: six high-performance ”super cores” supplemented by 12 efficiency cores, promising roughly 30% speed gains in professional applications. Graphics capabilities get a substantial boost too, with the M5 Pro housing up to 20 GPU cores and the M5 Max scaling to 40 cores, each equipped with a dedicated Neural Accelerator to accelerate AI workloads.

Apple claims that the new GPUs deliver over four times the peak compute power for AI tasks compared to the previous generation, alongside improved ray tracing for advanced 3D rendering and visual effects. Memory configurations support up to 64GB unified RAM on M5 Pro and a staggering 128GB on M5 Max, with bandwidths reaching 307GB/s and 614GB/s, respectively, enabling snappy data throughput.
Storage options have also been upgraded, starting at 1TB and configurable up to 8TB. The machines sport Liquid Retina XDR displays with ProMotion at 120Hz, Thunderbolt 5 ports, and a new N1 wireless chip that supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Other features include a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, studio-quality microphones, a six-speaker system with Spatial Audio, and battery life that can stretch to an impressive 24 hours depending on use.
Pricing, availability, and what this means for pros
Pre-orders for the fresh MacBook Pro lineup are already open, with shipments starting March 11. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro begins at $2,199 in the U.S., while more powerful configurations push the price higher based on selected memory, storage, and GPU specs. The bigger 16-inch model with M5 Pro starts at $2,699, whereas the M5 Max-equipped versions start at $3,599 and rise with customization.
This update cements Apple’s continued focus on catering to professionals who rely on MacBooks for demanding tasks like 3D rendering, AI computations, and software development. While rivals such as Intel and AMD make gains in laptop silicon, Apple’s tight chip-to-software integration still sets it apart, especially as creative and AI workloads escalate in complexity.
