Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro desktop tower, marking the end of an era for its high-end Intel-based workstation. Though last refreshed in 2023 with an M2 Ultra chip, the Mac Pro has vanished from Apple’s website and store listings, confirming rumors that the company is pivoting fully to its smaller, more efficient Mac Studio as its flagship professional machine.

Introduced in 2019 with a distinctive ”cheese-grater” chassis and packed with Intel processors and expansion slots, the Mac Pro was Apple’s answer to professional users frustrated by earlier performance gaps. However, the rapid transition to Apple Silicon starting in 2020 quickly overshadowed the Intel-based design. While Apple upgraded the Mac Pro to the M2 Ultra chip without revamping its bulky frame, the leaner Mac Studio, launched in 2022, stole the spotlight with custom ARM chips and a more compact form factor.

This consolidation aligns with Apple’s broader push toward in-house silicon, prioritizing power efficiency and tighter hardware integration. Bloomberg had reported plans to retire the Mac Pro by late 2025, but Apple completed the move quietly earlier in 2024. Now, the Mac Studio stands as the premier option for creatives and professionals seeking maximum performance within the Apple ecosystem.

Apple continues to enhance its pro lineup through peripherals like the Studio Display XDR, a newer alternative to the 2019 Pro Display XDR that originally complemented the Mac Pro. The final piece to cement the Mac Studio’s role as Apple’s top-tier machine is anticipated to be an upgrade to the M5 Max chip, promising even greater performance in a streamlined package.

With the Mac Pro gone, Apple’s approach to professional desktops embraces smaller footprints and advanced silicon, reflecting changing demands in creative workflows and a clear break from legacy Intel designs. Whether the Mac Studio can fully satisfy all high-end professional needs without the Mac Pro’s modular expandability remains to be seen, but for now, Apple’s future in pro computing is unmistakably focused on efficiency and integration.
