The successor to the Sony Xperia 1 VII, currently priced at $1,499 on Amazon, is expected to debut this June if Sony sticks to last year’s schedule. Meanwhile, images surfaced on Chinese social platform Weibo, courtesy of Sumaho Digest, appear to reveal the design of the upcoming Sony Xperia 1 VIII. The source? A case manufacturer leaking what looks like official renders.
Leaks like this should always be taken with a grain of salt since their authenticity hasn’t been confirmed. Still, the admin of the largest Vietnamese Xperia Facebook community insists these renders are close to the final design. If true, Sony is poised to make significant visual changes to its flagship.
Square camera module replaces elongated bump on Xperia 1 VIII
The biggest design update is the switch from a long vertical camera bar seen on the Xperia 1 VII to a compact square module housing three lenses and an LED flash on the Xperia 1 VIII. The Zeiss T* branding remains visible, confirming Sony’s ongoing collaboration with the German optics specialist.

Display and hardware updates on Xperia 1 VIII
Sony appears to have trimmed the top and bottom bezels while dropping the front stereo speakers in favor of a punch-hole selfie camera. The screen ratio jumped to an ultra-wide 21:9 from the previous model’s 19.5:9, improving cinematic viewing angles but also altering the overall shape.
The familiar 3.5mm headphone jack remains at the top edge. The USB-C port and SIM card slot stay at the bottom, and on the right side, Sony retains a dedicated camera shutter button-a feature rarely seen outside photography-centric phones.
Processor and camera specs in Sony Xperia 1 VIII
Earlier leaks suggest the Xperia 1 VIII will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and may sport a staggering 200MP telephoto sensor, pushing Sony’s camera capabilities well beyond many competitors. This aligns with Sony’s strategy to differentiate its phones by focusing on pro-grade imaging, leveraging its camera hardware expertise.
While manufacturers like Apple and Samsung have introduced multi-lens camera setups and wider sensor arrays, a 200MP telephoto lens would put Sony in rare company, potentially outclassing many Android flagships in raw resolution on this lens.

With the Xperia 1 VIII, Sony seems ready to revamp not only its hardware but its design language to stand out in a crowded flagship space. The move towards a more compact, squared camera module could imply changes in internal camera tech or heat management. As the launch approaches, it will be interesting to see how Sony balances its signature minimalist aesthetic with increasingly complex camera hardware.
