Sony has announced a major price increase for PlayStation 5 consoles and related devices across all key markets. The US faces the steepest hike, with prices jumping by $100, marking one of the biggest single raises in the PlayStation 5 system’s history.

The company attributes the decision to ”ongoing pressures in the global economy,” citing similar reasons it gave for previous price adjustments in 2022 and 2023. With inflation and rising costs squeezing margins, Sony is adjusting prices once again to maintain profitability.

PlayStation 5 new pricing by region

Here are the updated PlayStation 5 prices, effective April 2, 2026:

  • United States:
    PlayStation 5 – $649.99
    PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $599.99
    PlayStation 5 Pro – $899.99
    PlayStation Portal – $249.99
  • United Kingdom:
    PlayStation 5 – £569.99
    Digital Edition – £519.99
    PlayStation 5 Pro – £789.99
    PlayStation Portal – £219.99
  • Europe:
    PlayStation 5 – €649.99
    Digital Edition – €599.99
    PlayStation 5 Pro – €899.99
    PlayStation Portal – €249.99
  • Japan:
    PlayStation 5 – ¥97,980
    Digital Edition – ¥89,980
    PlayStation 5 Pro – ¥137,980
    PlayStation Portal – ¥39,980

While these new prices put the PlayStation 5 Pro close to $900 in the US and €900 in Europe, they still keep Sony competitive in the gaming console market, given ongoing supply chain challenges and inflation. For comparison, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X remains priced at roughly $499, while Nintendo Switch models start cheaper but cater to a different audience.

Sony’s price shift reflects a wider trend in the gaming hardware industry, where economic uncertainty and component shortages continue to push manufacturers to raise costs. This is notable given Sony’s efforts to boost sales via digital editions and accessories like the PlayStation Portal handheld device, which also sees a price bump.

As the global economy remains volatile, Sony’s approach signals a cautious strategy to protect its profit margins without drastically sacrificing demand. How gamers will respond to these PlayStation 5 price hikes-especially with growing subscription services and digital purchases changing how consoles are valued-is now the key question.
