SmartSens has unveiled the SC5A6XS, a new 50-megapixel camera sensor designed for flagship smartphones, featuring a large 1-inch format and advanced video capabilities. The sensor targets improvements in dynamic range, low-light performance, and power efficiency, signaling a strong push toward enhancing mobile photography and videography for the next generation of devices.
Built on a 22nm stacked process, the SC5A6XS incorporates SmartSens’s upgraded Lofic HDR 3.0 technology, delivering a notable 115dB peak dynamic range. This allows the sensor to capture more detail in both brightly lit highlights and deep shadows, addressing the typical challenges posed by high-contrast scenes. Its HDR approach combines multi-frame fusion within a single exposure, which also helps minimize motion blur and artifacts during video recording-a valuable feature for smartphones capturing fast or moving subjects.

Video capabilities are particularly impressive, with the sensor supporting 4K recording at 120fps, plus 4K at 60fps in HDR mode. This combination allows smooth slow-motion captures in ultra-high resolution and HDR-quality video, catering to content creators and enthusiasts using smartphones as their main camera.
On the hardware front, the sensor’s 1.6μm pixel size works alongside SFCPixel technology to boost light sensitivity while reducing electronic noise. This promises cleaner images in dim environments without the graininess common in low light. Autofocus is powered by a mixed system involving full-pixel AllPix ADAF and partial-pixel phase detection, designed to offer rapid and accurate focusing even in challenging lighting conditions.
Power efficiency and release timeline of SmartSens SC5A6XS camera sensor
SmartSens also claims an 11% reduction in power consumption in HDR mode, potentially curbing the heat issues that plague extended video sessions on many smartphones. The SC5A6XS is currently in sampling and is expected to be mass-produced by Q2 2026, with rumors pointing to the Huawei Pura 90 series as one of the first handsets to deploy this sensor.
Comparison of SmartSens SC5A6XS to Sony and Samsung flagship sensors
The SC5A6XS’s combination of large sensor size, high resolution, superior dynamic range, and strong video specs positions it as a direct competitor to sensors from Sony and Samsung, which have dominated flagship camera modules. Its focus on HDR and efficient video recording responds to consumer demand for versatile phone cameras that excel in both still photography and video creation.
With the smartphone camera market increasingly prioritizing video performance and adaptability in various lighting, SmartSens’s SC5A6XS could become a sought-after option for brands aiming to push mobile imaging boundaries without excessive power trade-offs. Whether it can capture significant market share remains to be seen, but its specs firmly place it among the contenders for 2026’s top-tier smartphone cameras.
