Samsung is already stirring excitement around its upcoming One UI 9, even though its current Galaxy S26 series just arrived with One UI 8.5. Early leaks suggest the update, built on Android 17 and expected this summer, will sharpen the interface with subtle design tweaks and introduce a standout new feature in the Gallery app.
One UI 9 appears to embrace a darker, sleeker aesthetic for the Now Bar, which gains a dimmed background and animated track info that slides along its pill-shaped housing. The bar also adds customization options, letting users long-press to either remove it or adjust its toggles. Samsung’s widgets are getting a facelift, too, swapping rounded corners for a more squared-off look-possibly to streamline the visual language or hint at future options for adjusting corner styles.
The most notable upgrade comes in the Gallery, where selecting multiple images will now summon a dedicated selection box displaying up to 15 photos at once. This new overlay gives users an immediate overview of selected items, a handy solution to the often cumbersome task of managing multiple photos across albums and folders. If Samsung delivers on this UI enhancement, it would simplify photo organization considerably-a problem many users face daily.
While these features stem from early leaks and could evolve before the official rollout, the logical progression is for One UI 9 to debut alongside Samsung’s next foldables-the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8-echoing the pattern seen with Android 16 and One UI 8 on last year’s foldables. This timing places the update neatly in summer, aligning with Samsung’s usual release cycle.
Beyond aesthetics and new functionalities, the refined Now Bar and Gallery improvements demonstrate Samsung’s focus on user convenience, often overlooked in big software updates. The Gallery selection box may sound simple, but it tackles a persistent pain point with elegant efficiency. Competitors would be wise to watch this move closely-design innovations like this often ripple across the Android ecosystem.
