Cosplayers Daria Kravets (Fishy Cosplay) and Katarina Belokrylova (Catie) have released a joint photoshoot portraying 2B and A2 from NieR: Automata-but with a surprising twist. Instead of the iconic black battle outfits, the characters appear in elegant white dresses, sparking a heated debate among fans about this fresh reinterpretation of the classic designs.
2B and A2 are central to NieR: Automata’s story, embodying contrasting yet intertwined roles. 2B, or YoRHa No. 2 Type B, is the game’s heroine and one of the most recognizable video game characters of the past decade. She’s a combat android designed to fight mechanical enemies, known for her sleek black dress, thigh-high boots, and trademark blindfold-a look that has become a staple of gaming cosplay worldwide.

A2, or YoRHa Type A No. 2, carries a darker backstory. She’s a deserter and prototype for later YoRHa androids, including 2B. Whereas 2B operates within the system’s command, A2 acts independently, embodying rebellion. Their fraught dynamic drives much of the game’s emotional weight, making a joint cosplay of the two an engaging exploration of two sides of the same coin.

The choice of white dresses serves as a deliberate contrast to the characters’ canonical black outfits. In NieR: Automata, white is often linked to enemy androids or key plot moments (better left unspoiled). Whether intended as a meaningful reinterpretation or just an aesthetic choice, the look clearly divides fans.

Since its release in 2017, NieR: Automata has maintained a strong cultural presence. Available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, the game’s cross-platform availability is unmatched. Recently, the developers shared impressive sales numbers and dropped hints about a sequel, re-energizing community interest. Meanwhile, 2B made a cameo in the multiplayer shooter Overwatch, introducing the character to a fresh audience.
Fishy Cosplay and Catie have built reputations for crafting cosplays that transcend costume, turning each project into a unique visual statement-and this latest collaboration is no exception.
