ASUS has refreshed its ROG Strix G16 and G18 gaming laptops for 2026, stepping up performance and display quality with Intel’s latest Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processors and Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPUs. These powerful components are paired with high-refresh-rate screens and innovative cooling solutions to tackle demanding gaming and creative tasks, while a redesigned chassis aims to make upgrades and maintenance simpler than ever.

The Strix G16’s 16-inch panel boasts a 2.5K (2560 x 1600) IPS-level display that refreshes at 300Hz and offers a 3ms response time, stepping up from the previous 240Hz model. It’s equipped with 100% DCI-P3 color coverage, Pantone validation, Dolby Vision, and NVIDIA’s G-SYNC for tear-free gaming. Meanwhile, the larger Strix G18 is packed with an 18-inch 2.5K Mini LED screen featuring more than 2,000 local dimming zones, a 240Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, and a striking peak brightness reaching 1600 nits-a big leap for HDR enthusiasts who crave deep contrast and vivid colors.

Both screens include anti-reflective coatings to maintain clarity in bright environments and preserve color consistency from various angles. These visual upgrades pair well with the laptops’ internal hardware. The Intel Core Ultra 9 chip teams up with Nvidia’s RTX 5080 Laptop GPU, supporting DLSS 4 and Multi-Frame Generation to boost performance in supported games and applications like video editing or 3D rendering.

Performance and thermal management in the 2026 ROG Strix models

Thermal management has received a fresh take, combining vapor chamber cooling, a three-fan setup, and a layered heatsink design that promises to keep fans quiet and temperatures stable during marathon sessions. ASUS also reworked the chassis to allow tool-less opening via spring-loaded tabs, speeding up access to RAM and SSD slots. The system supports up to 64GB of DDR5 memory at 6400MT/s and storage up to 2TB with PCIe 4.0 SSDs using a Q-Latch mechanism for easy upgrades.

Connectivity and upgrade options

  • Two Thunderbolt 5 ports with DisplayPort 2.1 and power delivery
  • Three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports
  • HDMI 2.1 output
  • 2.5G Ethernet and WiFi 7 support
  • Dolby Atmos sound, Hi-Res Audio, and AI noise cancellation

Design, battery life, and availability

The ROG Strix G16 weighs 2.7 kilograms, while the larger G18 tips the scale at 3.5 kilograms. Both are equipped with generous 90Wh batteries and support up to 380W power adapters. They include a per-key RGB keyboard featuring Aura Sync lighting and a dedicated Copilot key, running Windows 11 Pro right out of the box. Color options offered are Eclipse Grey and Volt Green.

ASUS hasn’t disclosed pricing or a release date yet, but the 2026 Strix refresh plots a course toward blending blistering performance with user-friendly upgradeability-something that’s often lacking in high-end gaming laptops. With Intel Core Ultra and RTX 50-series GPUs now becoming standard in premium gaming gear, ASUS is clearly pressing forward to compete with other leaders like Razer and MSI, who also prioritize screen quality and accessibility.
