Netflix and Ubisoft have announced that the upcoming Assassin’s Creed series will dive into Ancient Rome, set specifically in the year AD 64-right amid the empire’s turbulent history.

The cast features Toby Wallace (known for Babyteeth) and Lola Petticrew (from Say Nothing), alongside a diverse ensemble including Lara Marcus, Tanzin Crawford, Zakari Hart, Nabhaan Rizwan, Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, Ramsey Bedia, Sean Harris, Corrado Invernizzi, Sandra Guldberg Kampp, Youssef Kerkour, and Mirren Mack.

Netflix greenlit the project in July 2025. Showrunners Roberto Patino and David Wiener bring serious pedigree, with Emmy nominations to their names for work on DMZ, Westworld, Halo, and more.

Details on Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series setting and story

Previously described as a ”dynamic thriller about a secret war between two hidden factions,” the series promises a multi-character narrative set against pivotal historical events.

Patino and Wiener have been fans of Assassin’s Creed since the original 2007 game launched. They say this adaptation fuses intense action, parkour, and suspense with deeper explorations of identity, destiny, and belief.

The creators emphasize that while the show will examine themes like power, violence, greed, and revenge, its core is about human connections across cultures and eras-and what happens when those ties break down.

Background on Assassin’s Creed franchise and video game adaptations

For international audiences less familiar with the Assassin’s Creed franchise, it’s a long-running series of games by Ubisoft blending historical settings with stealth, parkour, and conspiracy-laden narratives. This new series aims to join the growing crowd of high-budget video game adaptations-comparable in scope to Amazon’s Rings of Power and ambition to Netflix’s own The Witcher series.

Historical context of AD 64 Rome in the Assassin’s Creed series

Setting the show during AD 64 places it in the aftermath of the Great Fire of Rome, a period rife with political intrigue under Emperor Nero. This offers a rich backdrop for exploring the secret conflict central to Assassin’s Creed lore.

Expectations for Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series

Expect the series to stand out by balancing blockbuster spectacle with thoughtful storytelling about identity and the human cost of power struggles. Whether it can capture the mythic scale and popular appeal of the games remains an open question-but with experienced showrunners and a strong cast, it’s a project worth watching closely.
