At SXSW, Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, offered a striking vision for the future of smartphones: apps as we know them will disappear, replaced by AI agents acting invisibly behind the scenes. As AI weaves deeper into mobile software, Pei argues that the traditional app model will become obsolete, pushing companies to rethink how users interact with their devices.

Pei’s vision challenges the current app economy, emphasizing the need for startups and established brands to adapt or risk disruption. Instead of AI agents mimicking human taps and swipes within apps, he proposes dedicated interfaces designed for these agents to communicate directly with software, a move he considers more future-proof. This separation of human and AI interaction layers could redefine how we command our devices.

Earlier, Pei hinted at a smartphone OS hosting just a single ”app” – itself – where AI handles individual tasks seamlessly behind the interface. Nothing is already laying groundwork with initiatives like Essential Apps, which let users customize home-screen widgets that might one day supplant full applications entirely. This shift envisions a cleaner, more intuitive way to complete tasks without opening multiple apps.

His critique also points at contemporaneous tech moves, such as Google’s Gemini AI automations that take limited control of apps like Uber or food delivery. Pei dismisses these as transitional, stating that AI imitating human input is not the endpoint technology should aim for. Instead, he urges development of APIs and protocols that enable AI agents to operate smoothly without human interface mimicry.

While he believes this AI-driven, app-free smartphone experience is still seven to ten years away due to user habits, Pei remains confident it’s coming. The smartphone itself will endure at least another five years but will see radical changes in its operating system and device ecosystem, possibly introducing entirely new types of gadgets alongside phones.

Pei also touched on Nothing’s ambitions in expanding their US presence, especially through partnerships with carriers, aiming to elevate their profile beyond audio products, which already have a strong American following. For Nothing, this AI-centric future represents both a technological and strategic opportunity as traditional smartphone interfaces buckle under AI’s rising influence.
