Google has begun testing a macOS version of its Gemini AI assistant app, aiming to compete with established rivals like ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, both of which already offer dedicated Mac apps. Gemini has traditionally been a web-based offering, but this new app delivers a more integrated desktop experience. Key AI features include responding to prompts, generating text, images, and code, and performing web searches.

One standout feature of the Gemini Mac app is ”Desktop Intelligence,” which allows the AI to access the context of what the user sees on their screen and retrieve content across other applications. By enabling this feature, Gemini can use live app data to provide more personalized and context-aware responses. Similar context-aware features are already available on ChatGPT and Claude’s macOS apps, and Gemini has supported this functionality on mobile devices.

It remains unclear if Gemini on Mac will extend beyond observation to executing commands within third-party apps, as Anthropic’s Claude does with its ”Claude Cowork” feature. However, Google has begun rolling out limited app interaction on its smartphone versions, suggesting that advanced desktop integration might follow.

According to Bloomberg, the macOS app is currently being tested with select non-Google users, indicating a possible public launch in the near future. Earlier this year, Apple and Google announced a collaboration in which Google’s Gemini models will support upcoming versions of Apple’s AI tools. This partnership suggests that parts of Gemini’s underlying technology could become central to macOS’s AI capabilities, especially as Apple moves to transform Siri into a more conversational chatbot powered by Gemini’s technology.

Launching a standalone Gemini app for macOS positions Google to better compete in the desktop AI assistant market, where Apple’s and OpenAI’s efforts have already gained momentum. The focus on desktop context awareness reflects a trend toward AI assistants that do more than answer queries-they understand the user’s environment to deliver tailored assistance. Whether Gemini will match or surpass competitors’ capabilities when fully released remains to be seen, but Google’s move makes the AI assistant landscape on Mac more dynamic and competitive.
