Amsterdam startup Reson8 has raised €5 million in pre-seed funding to develop a speech recognition platform finely tuned to European languages and industries, aiming to disrupt the dominance of US-focused generic speech AI models. The company’s technology adapts instantly to different dialects, jargon, and specialist terminology across more than 20 European languages, promising higher accuracy for fields such as healthcare, legal, and customer support.
Unlike broad, often clunky models that fail to capture nuanced language use outside English, Reson8’s platform enables quick customization by integrating relevant contextual data like documents or schedules. This adaptability addresses common failures of existing Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems, where users often must adjust their speech patterns to fit the software rather than the software adapting to the user. The result is more precise recognition in fast-moving conversations and complex dialogues.
Reson8’s speech AI tailored for European languages
Reson8 avoids the heavy, latency-prone retraining typical of traditional ASR systems by using modular ”pluggable adapters” that fine-tune recognition for individual conversations or sectors without adding complexity. This method preserves speed and responsiveness while allowing unique, real-time acoustic adjustments. The firm’s mission revolves around the principle ”your language, your jargon,” emphasizing that speech AI should conform to human variations rather than enforce rigid standards.
Operating on sovereign European infrastructure, Reson8 leverages strict data residency and privacy regulations to offer clients a fully compliant solution tailored to local industries’ needs. This localized hosting also positions Reson8 favorably amid growing European concerns about data sovereignty and AI governance, which are less addressed by US-based speech platforms.
Industries using Reson8’s specialized speech AI
Reson8’s speech AI is designed to handle specialized vocabularies such as drug names and clinical abbreviations for healthcare, detailed legal terminologies and jurisdiction-specific language, and brand- or product-specific jargon in customer service sectors. These focused capabilities aim to reduce costly manual corrections and improve workflow efficiencies across professional sectors often underserved by broad, English-centric speech tools.
The €5 million pre-seed funding round, led by Balderton Capital alongside NP Hard, will support infrastructure growth across Europe, further development of the company’s inference engine and foundational models, and strategic talent acquisition. Balderton highlighted Reson8’s technically adept team and well-positioned European-centric model as key factors behind their investment.
Reson8’s bold vision to localize speech AI marks a shift away from one-size-fits-all solutions. By offering finely tuned recognition adapted to the continent’s linguistic diversity and regulatory landscape, the startup could set a new standard for speech technologies catering specifically to non-English-speaking European markets.
