Microsoft has put a hold on its plans to embed Copilot AI features directly into Windows 11 notifications, signaling a more cautious approach after earlier missteps. Originally announced in 2024 alongside Copilot+ PC, the feature would have enabled the AI assistant to appear within app notifications, offering context-aware, one-click actions like opening files or replying to messages. However, despite nearly two years passing, users have yet to see this integration come to life.
Sources close to Windows Central reveal that following the rocky rollout of Windows Recall-a separate AI-powered feature-Microsoft paused some of its AI development projects within Windows 11. With Recall’s issues now addressed, the company is scaling back AI elements in the operating system, aiming for a more thoughtful and measured incorporation of Copilot across system apps and interfaces.
A Microsoft representative explained that their product development process relies heavily on early customer testing and iterative feedback, with some features undergoing private trials before public release, while others evolve based on open beta user input. This approach inevitably leads to modifications, removals, or replacements of proposed functions depending on user response.
Importantly, Microsoft isn’t abandoning AI in Windows entirely. The company intends to keep AI capabilities where they add real value, but these AI features will remain optional and fully toggleable. This shift hints at a growing awareness within Microsoft about the risks of overloading users with intrusive AI prompts, putting user control and choice at the forefront. In an environment where AI can quickly overwhelm interfaces, such restraint could ultimately benefit the Windows experience.
