Google is quietly evolving its Gemini AI app, preparing to introduce a new ”Discover” tab-not for news headlines or personalized feeds, but as a focused hub to help users understand and use Gemini’s capabilities better. This upcoming feature, spotted in app version 17.10.54.sa.arm64, aims to provide prompts, tutorials, and updates on new functionalities, accessible from the app’s sidebar. Unlike Google Discover, this tab will serve as an educational resource rather than a content aggregator.
Alongside the new Discover tab, Google is cautiously polishing Gemini’s interface with subtle tweaks. The sidebar now sports softer edges and a redesigned Settings button, aiming for a cleaner and more navigable experience. These are small but steady steps, indicating Google’s attention to refining how users interact with Gemini, edging the app closer to a familiar but distinct ecosystem separate from its other productivity tools like Gmail and Docs.
Another notable UI improvement touches how Gemini shows its ”thinking” process. Previously, selecting ”Show thinking” pushed the answer down to reveal logic and reasoning above it. Now, this will be handled by a bottom sheet popup, keeping the response visible while displaying the AI’s reasoning conveniently below. This change could make following Gemini’s thought process more intuitive and less disruptive.
Google hasn’t stopped there. The overlay that appears when interacting with Gemini is also being reworked: the input box will be separated from the AI’s answers, featuring a clear close button on the top right. Voice output controls are moving to the bottom right for easier single-handed use. Such attention to ergonomics reflects how voice assistants and AI chat apps are increasingly designed for on-the-go scenarios.
None of these enhancements have reached stable or beta releases yet, and Google remains tight-lipped on rollout timelines. The new Discover tab, in particular, reflects Google’s push to make AI tools more approachable and transparent. While other AI platforms race to expand raw functionality, Gemini seems to be carving its niche through smoother UI and better user guidance-an often overlooked but important battleground in AI adoption.
