Tesla’s Model Y has officially crossed the 4 million sales mark globally, cementing its status as the world’s top-selling passenger car for three years running. Surpassing not just electric rivals but gas and hybrid vehicles alike, the Model Y continues to be Tesla’s sales powerhouse despite recent market headwinds.
In 2025 alone, Tesla produced 1,654,667 vehicles and delivered 1,636,129 to customers, with the Model Y accounting for the lion’s share of those numbers. The vehicle’s dominance is particularly pronounced in China, Tesla’s largest single market, where nearly 68% of all sales last year were Model Ys.
China’s importance to Tesla can’t be overstated. The Giga Shanghai factory churned out 851,732 vehicles in 2025, responsible for around 52% of Tesla’s global sales. February’s Chinese deliveries hit 38,206 units-a surge of more than 42% compared to the same month the previous year-highlighting strong momentum in the region.

Particularly striking were the Model Y’s February results in China, with sales skyrocketing 215.84% year-over-year to 25,286 units. That surge lifted Tesla’s share of the fully electric vehicle segment in China to 13.74%, its highest level in nearly two years.
However, Tesla faces growing challenges. Despite global success, Model Y’s sales in China fell 34.44% year-over-year in 2025, hitting 425,337 units. As the best-selling electric SUV, it has become the prime target for a rising tide of competitors.
New entrants like Xiaomi have intensified the fight. In January, Xiaomi’s YU7 crossover overtook the Model Y as China’s best-selling electric vehicle for the month-an unmistakable sign that Tesla’s dominance is not guaranteed and that emerging brands are rapidly reshaping the market.
Considering China-made Model Ys exported abroad, wholesale shipments stood at 538,994 units in 2025, down 3.18% from the previous year. Even with strong global demand, the electric SUV market is saturating, forcing Tesla to compete both with established automakers and tech firms entering the EV space.
Hitting 4 million sales is a milestone few vehicles reach, underscoring the Model Y’s massive appeal amid shifts in the auto industry. Analysts at JATO Dynamics and Statista note the Model Y remains a key benchmark for electrification. The pressing question: how long can Tesla hold on to its lead as competition heats up?
