Sony is enhancing its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) AI upscaling on the PS5 Pro with a significant software update rolling out from March 17. This upgrade promises sharper visuals and smoother effects by addressing issues like flicker and shimmering that previously affected upscaled images. It builds on AMD and Sony’s Project Amethyst collaboration, which uses AI to upscale game graphics from lower native resolutions without sacrificing framerate, improving performance while keeping gameplay fluid.

Early testing by Digital Foundry shows the upgraded PSSR brings meaningful improvements across titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Silent Hill 2. Alongside cleaner and more consistent visuals, Sony says this update will also benefit AMD’s future FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) versions, signaling tighter synergy between console and PC upscaling technologies. This iteration of PSSR mirrors AMD’s AI-driven FSR 4 technology recently introduced for PCs, marking a rare case where console and PC upscaling approaches are converging.

Games benefiting from the upgraded AI upscaling

Beyond the headline titles, Sony has confirmed an extensive roster of games that will receive the PSSR upgrade on PS5 Pro, including:

  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard
  • Alan Wake 2
  • Control
  • Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II
  • Nioh 3
  • Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows will receive the update via patches in the coming weeks, while Crimson Desert will launch with PSSR support on March 19. For games that currently support PSSR but aren’t on the update list, players can toggle the new tech on or off, though Sony warns that results may differ depending on the title.

This update is a clear advancement in extracting more graphical fidelity from existing console hardware using AI-driven upscaling. It also highlights a trend where console manufacturers and chip designers increasingly rely on machine learning to enhance visual quality without requiring costly hardware upgrades.
