Apple is gearing up to join the foldable smartphone club in 2026, with Samsung Display set to be its exclusive supplier for flexible screens. Contrary to earlier estimates of 13-15 million units, Apple’s initial order for foldable displays reportedly reached around 20 million, signaling strong confidence in its first foldable iPhone’s prospects.

Samsung Display is uniquely positioned, as Apple declined Chinese screen maker BOE, which failed to meet volume and quality demands. Production of these foldable panels is expected to begin as early as May 2026, making Samsung the linchpin in Apple’s foldable ambitions. This exclusivity gives Samsung a rare edge, even as its own mobile division prepares competing devices.

The foldable iPhone’s screen will reportedly debut with an unusual aspect ratio-wider than even Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. This design choice fits Apple’s tendency to do things its own way. Interestingly, Samsung appears to be prepping a competitor in a similar ”wide” category, tentatively called the Galaxy Wide Fold, hinting that the foldable smartphone segment could expand beyond traditional design boundaries this year.

Beyond the wider foldable, rumors suggest Apple might also explore a Flip-style foldable iPhone, which could echo but also challenge Samsung’s dominant Flip series. With Apple’s entry, the foldable smartphone market is poised for intensified rivalry and diverse design experiments.

Samsung’s role as Apple’s sole foldable screen supplier marks a shift from previous dynamics, underscoring South Korea’s tech dominance even as Apple extends its influence in hardware innovation. How well the foldable iPhone will perform and whether it will spark a demand surge remains to be seen-yet the stage is clearly set for a high-stakes 2026 debut.
