Disney+ has re-enabled Dolby Vision HDR and 3D content support after a patent-related legal dispute temporarily forced these features offline in Germany and several other regions. The streaming giant had removed Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support in affected areas last month, also impacting 3D playback on devices like the Apple Vision Pro headset. Although the disruption lasted just over a month, it sparked frustration among users who value high dynamic range formats for premium visual quality.

The root cause of the sudden blackout, confirmed by Disney, was a patent lawsuit in a German patent court compelling the streaming service to temporarily halt some advanced video format offerings in Germany and other markets. Disney expressed disappointment over the forced change and acknowledged customer frustration.

Despite HDR10+ never officially launching in Europe on Disney+, the removal of Dolby Vision was particularly notable because it is widely regarded as essential for premium HDR streaming. Disney has now restored Dolby Vision and 3D support to all affected users, urging those still having issues to ensure their apps are up to date. Interestingly, Disney’s official support pages have not yet been updated to reflect the return of Dolby Vision, suggesting some delay in documentation.

This hiccup highlights the ongoing impact that patent conflicts can have on access to high-end streaming features in specific regions. Content providers and device makers have faced similar battles before around HDR technologies, which often involve multiple licensors holding essential patents. Consumers occasionally bear the brunt as new technology rollouts stall or are withdrawn in certain countries while legal matters resolve.

With the dispute settled and Dolby Vision back on Disney+, the company can now focus on delivering the premium visual experience subscribers expect. Meanwhile, rivals like Netflix and Apple TV+ continue to invest heavily in HDR and 3D content, making it critical for Disney+ to avoid further interruptions in supporting advanced display technologies.
