VK Play has released insights from a survey of over 5,400 players that challenge traditional stereotypes about women gamers. The data reveals that women’s gaming engagement actually increases with age: after 35, they play more frequently and with greater intensity than many men. Notably, among women over 55, 72% play daily-a higher rate than their male peers.
This trend is particularly striking in Russia, where gaming has long been seen as a younger man’s world. VK Play’s findings suggest a major shift in the demographic makeup of the gaming community, with mature women emerging as a powerful and highly active player base.
Age reshapes not just interests, but attitudes toward gaming
Traditionally, gamers have been associated with teenagers and young adults, but VK Play flips this notion on its head. Girls under 18 play less often than boys, but after 35, women begin turning to games for relaxation and socializing. In the 45-54 age group, women spend more time gaming than men, and among those over 55, women dominate daily gaming activity.
Gaming as a relationship builder and dating filter
Gaming has long shrugged off the image of a solo, niche hobby. Nearly half of the surveyed players report being in stable relationships, and 60% of women gamers include their gaming interests on dating profiles, hoping to find partners who share their passion. For about a third, gaming is a dealbreaker-if interests don’t align, the conversation stops. Many respondents highlight how games help break the ice and foster closeness.
Men appreciate this aspect of female gaming: 50% find women gamers attractive, and a third admit that gaming earns respect. Women are equally discerning: 33% see male gamers as attractive, and 13% admire them as smart, tech-savvy conversationalists who can keep up with the topic.
Co-op gaming becomes a new love language with real perks
Sixty percent of couples have played games together at least once, with women more likely to view it romantically. For 32% of women, a shared gaming session counts as an ideal date-compared to just 20% of men. Playing together is more than fun: 44% of couples say it broadens their topics of conversation, and 35% feel it turns them into a real team. Conflicts over gaming are rare, affecting only 6% of respondents.
Gaming budgets and spending priorities among women gamers
Women gamers show the most willingness to spend on game purchases (70-75%) and expansions (60%), as well as subscriptions (55-60%). However, they’re more cautious about microtransactions like donations, skins, and loot boxes, with only 20-40% open to spending on those. On average, couples set around 5,000 rubles per month as their optimal gaming budget.
These findings shatter old stereotypes and shift how we understand the gaming audience. Women aren’t just playing actively; they’re using gaming as a social and romantic tool. This evolution demands that developers and platforms rethink their approaches and broaden their offerings-because ignoring engaged, mature women gamers simply isn’t an option anymore.
