Hotel Barcelona has received a substantial update titled ”Under New Management,” revamping its core gameplay systems and adding new cosmetic content without charge. Released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series, this patch aims to refine player experience by smoothing combat mechanics, rebalancing enemies, and improving multiplayer fairness, among other upgrades.
Combat gets a faster, more tactical makeover
At the heart of this update lies a significant overhaul of the combat system designed to reward more aggressive and skillful play. Players can now chain attacks with shorter animations and recover more quickly thanks to expanded cancel windows, allowing for fluid transitions into jumps, dodges, or guards. The stamina system has been recalibrated to add weight to defensive choices-guarding now consumes stamina, making timing more critical.
Another major tweak is a fully reworked parry system, which now requires precise guard timing to trigger. Successful parries no longer just block damage but also grant HP recovery orbs, incentivizing a more proactive defense. Skill trees have been reorganized with added parry-related abilities and a new ”Enhancement Luck+” skill, deepening character progression strategies. Weapon balance has been tuned as well, notably adjusting the flamethrower’s attack power.
Enemies and stages refined for better pacing
Enemy behavior and stage design also received attention. Various foes have been rebalanced with altered hit points, attack range, and reaction times, ensuring encounters remain challenging yet fair. Notably, the Phantom Lost enemy has been removed from Normal difficulty and below, streamlining the experience for more casual players. Bosses Jacob, Nigel, and Eve got durability tweaks and behavior updates, while environments were polished with improvements to terrain, camera distance, and door placements.
Multiplayer improvements and quality-of-life updates
Multiplayer mode benefits from fixes addressing imbalance issues caused by varying player progression. Doppelgänger invasions are disabled during boss fights to preserve intensity and focus, and they no longer interfere with enemies or environmental hazards. Matchmaking and user interface enhancements aim to provide smoother multiplayer sessions. Overall game performance is optimized, with new support for DualShock controllers and improved tutorials and UI layouts. Dialogue autoplay and numerous bug fixes enhance accessibility and polish.
Free collaboration skins add a fresh aesthetic layer
To celebrate the update, five new playable skins have been introduced for free, bridging Hotel Barcelona with indie and horror worlds. Highlights include Demonschool Faye’s eerie presence, two distinct characters from the horror-themed Slitterhead-Alex and Julee-plus the surreal Pinky and Michi mascots from Promise Mascot Agency. These crossovers bring unique visual flair that contrasts sharply with the game’s dark atmosphere.
Hotel Barcelona’s ”Under New Management” patch signals a developer commitment to player feedback, emphasizing tight combat and fair multiplayer while enhancing narrative immersion with new cosmetics. As an action side-scroller blending horror and management elements, it sits in a niche where iterative improvements can greatly affect long-term enjoyment. Whether these changes will elevate its stature among recent indie action releases remains to be seen, but the update broadens its appeal through both gameplay depth and stylish variety.
