Minisforum just unveiled the MS-03, a compact mini PC designed as a workstation for on-premise AI computing. Rather than relying on powerful integrated graphics, this small rig pairs an Intel Panther Lake CPU with up to 128GB of RAM, multiple high-speed network ports, and a full-sized PCIe slot-a rare combination in such a tiny chassis. It supports U.2 SSDs and can even fit a discrete GPU, targeting users who need serious local AI processing without a bulky desktop.

The MS-03 runs on Intel’s Core Ultra 9 386H processor, based on Tiger Lake architecture, which Intel is positioning as the foundation for next-gen AI PCs. Unlike higher-end Panther Lake chips with more GPU cores, this model features only four Xe GPU cores out of a possible twelve. That means its graphics performance won’t rival AMD’s Ryzen AI Max systems, which are also growing in popularity for local AI workloads.

Where the MS-03 stands out is in expandability. It includes three SSD slots-including support for enterprise-grade U.2 drives-and a full-length PCIe x8 slot allowing a compact GPU upgrade. However, the small chassis limits you to low-power graphics cards with a maximum 75W consumption and no extra external power connector.

  • Intel Core Ultra 9 386H processor
  • Up to 128GB RAM
  • Three SSD slots with U.2 support
  • PCIe x8 slot for compact discrete GPUs (max 75W)
  • Two USB4 ports
  • Four high-speed Ethernet ports: dual 10 GbE SFP+, 10 GbE RJ45, and 2.5 GbE RJ45

Networking is a major highlight. With four fast interfaces-including two 10Gbps SFP+ ports-the MS-03 resembles compact server or edge computing hardware more than a typical mini PC. Such high-end connectivity options remain rare in this segment.

MS-03 core features and expandability for local AI processing

The push for local AI computing in a compact form is heating up, with companies like Asus, HP, and Dell rolling out AI PCs based on Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm platforms. Apple’s Mac Studio dominates the premium mini workstation niche. Minisforum’s approach differs by focusing on maximal expandability and connectivity rather than closed systems. If the MS-03’s price stays below traditional full-sized workstations, it could attract AI enthusiasts and small creative studios needing on-site model deployment without dedicated servers.

Networking options in Minisforum MS-03 mini PC for fast data transfer

As local AI computing becomes mainstream, machines like the MS-03 will test demand for customizable, network-rich mini workstations. It will be interesting to see if Minisforum’s balance of size, expandability, and network ports can carve out a sustainable niche against both DIY builds and branded mini AI PCs from industry giants.
