Google has started rolling out its July 2026 security patch for Pixel phones and tablets powered by Tensor chips running Android 17. This update addresses serious issues like devices stuck in endless boot loops, app crashes, and UI glitches on foldable Pixel models.

The update covers the entire Tensor-based Pixel lineup, including the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series, all versions of the Pixel Fold, the A-series, and the Pixel Tablet-all running Android 17. The patch is rolling out in stages, so some devices may receive it later than others.

The most critical fix resolves a system bug that caused some devices to enter endless boot loops or fail to start Android altogether. Google also patched a framework issue that led to widgets displaying odd colors and contrast anomalies, while certain apps were crashing or refusing to open.

Foldable Pixel users get a dedicated UI fix. Previously, after folding and unfolding the screen, navigation buttons could shift from their designated spots. Additionally, there’s a wallpaper-related tweak ensuring shape effects now stay in the background rather than obscuring foreground objects.

This update only applies to Tensor-equipped Pixel devices, starting with the 2021 Pixel 6. Older Pixels using Qualcomm Snapdragon chips are not included. Google’s update model here is typical: monthly patches address bugs and security flaws, while bigger features roll out through quarterly Pixel Feature Drops. Long-term Android support like this is uncommon, even as Samsung recently pledged up to seven years of updates for its Galaxy S24 flagships.

Pixel 8 owners and newer will especially appreciate this update cadence. Starting with that generation, Google committed to delivering up to seven years of Android and security updates-a promise that keeps devices relevant and stable much longer than the market average. This means these Pixels not only receive important security patches but also essential fixes that prevent frustrating problems like boot loops that could otherwise render devices unusable.
