A cosplay model has brought to life one of Guilty Gear’s most eccentric fighters: A.B.A., the homunculus armed not only with her deadly skills but also accompanied by her living weapon-and, in her own words, her husband-a talking battle axe named Paracelsus.
Who is A.B.A. in Guilty Gear?
A.B.A. is a laboratory-created artificial lifeform, engineered by a scientist named Paracelsus in the Frasco estate. Just as she was about to awaken, a military organization with interests in her technology swooped in, closing off the estate and isolating her from the outside world. She spent her first decade in total confinement, aware she could technically leave the lab but unable to survive without her life-support equipment.

To fend off loneliness, A.B.A. started collecting keys-symbols of unlocking new worlds she hopes to explore someday. Deeply shy from years without human contact, she hides her insecurities behind an artificially authoritative, academic manner of speaking and avoids confrontation whenever possible.

How Paracelsus became her husband
Once she finally left the lab, A.B.A. discovered a relic from the Great War-a battle axe named Flamment Nagel. The axe’s shape reminded her of a key, sparking an instant affection. She named it Paracelsus after her creator and has since carried it with her as her weapon, partner, and self-declared husband.

Paracelsus usually takes the form of a bright yellow, round-faced smiley with a stitched mouth-a quirky, slightly unsettling sight seen behind the cosplayer in the photos. The axe’s wide eyes with black pupils and the bags under them echo the combat-worn aesthetic, while the belt bearing the inscription ”HOHENHEIM” nods to the real Paracelsus-Theophrastus von Hohenheim-a Renaissance alchemist who originally theorized homunculi.
Why fans clamored for A.B.A.’s return
A.B.A. first appeared in the Guilty Gear spinoff Isuka but was absent from the main trilogy until 2024, when she joined as the third character in the third season pass of Guilty Gear Strive. Her reveal at the Arc World Tour Finals on March 20 sparked huge excitement. Many fans had waited years for her comeback, with some even insisting on social media that A.B.A. deserves to be the franchise’s face instead of the longtime mascot, Sol Badguy.

Cosplay design details of Guilty Gear’s A.B.A.
The outfit sticks closely to the original design: a white and cream ensemble with off-the-shoulder details, black belts around the waist linked by a key-shaped buckle, and bandaged arms. Her green hair and eye color match the canonical look, though official artwork over the years has shown her eyes as blue, gray, or brown-a quirk fans have come to embrace as part of her character’s mystique.
Guilty Gear holds a unique spot in fighting games with its elaborate characters and lore-rich universe, often highlighting a blend of anime-inspired aesthetics and intricate backstories. The return of niche fighters like A.B.A. shows developer Arc System Works’ commitment to catering to devoted fans hungry for both gameplay and character depth, standing apart from the more mainstream character rosters of franchises like Street Fighter or Tekken.
As Guilty Gear Strive continues to expand its roster in 2024, how Arc System Works balances fan favorites alongside fresh faces will be a key story to watch. Will characters like A.B.A., with their layered lore and distinct personalities, become the new icons replacing longstanding series staples? Or will the franchise evolve to blend legacy and innovation in unexpected ways? The next season pass announcements promise to be an exciting barometer of the series’ direction.
