Tomb Raider Definitive Edition is getting a physical release on cartridge for the Nintendo Switch 2, a rare move in a world dominated by digital sales on new consoles. Limited Run Games will handle the release, and preorders are open now, closing August 3, Moscow time.
Limited Run Games is offering two editions for this release. The Standard Edition includes the game cartridge and an exclusive booklet. Meanwhile, the Collector’s Edition features a steel case designed as a tea box, a Pry Axe keychain, a CD soundtrack, and a paper map of Yamatai. The company follows a familiar model: preorders remain open for a limited window before production begins.
This isn’t a brand-new Tomb Raider game but rather a reissue of a classic for a fresh audience. The Definitive Edition originally launched as an enhanced version of the 2013 reboot. Crystal Dynamics rebuilt Lara Croft from the ground up with improved graphics, lighting, and character models. Many fans consider this release the foundation of the new trilogy that continued with Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
The decision to produce a physical cartridge now is especially relevant amid ongoing debates over digital versus physical game ownership. Limited Run Games, founded in 2015, specializes in physical editions of niche or archived games and was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022. However, the broader gaming landscape overwhelmingly favors digital sales, with many physical boxes containing only download codes. For the Switch 2, getting a full-fledged cartridge is now a notable selling point rather than just a formality.
Switch owners typically show stronger enthusiasm for collectible physical editions than other gamers, with demand driving resale values for rare cartridges. Whether this Tomb Raider physical release will catch on remains to be seen after preorder closure in early August. If the limited run sells out quickly, Limited Run Games gains more incentive to continue investing in physical editions for next-gen consoles.
