Samsung has officially revealed that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, just days before its expected unveiling at the July 22 Unpacked event. Alongside Qualcomm, Samsung announced on Weibo that both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will feature this high-performance chipset, continuing the brand’s trend of equipping its foldable phones with Snapdragon rather than Exynos processors for several generations.

The announcement arrives right before Samsung’s summer showcase, where the new foldables are expected to be revealed in full. The chip referenced is reportedly the ”for Galaxy” variant-a Qualcomm-tuned version optimized with higher clock speeds. Qualcomm specifies a boost of the main CPU core up to 4.74 GHz and GPU frequencies around 1.3 GHz, promising solid improvements in raw processing power.

While full benchmark details remain under wraps, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s baseline performance already hints at significant gains in graphics and AI workloads compared to previous Qualcomm flagship chips. Qualcomm claims the chip delivers up to 100 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) in on-device AI, roughly double that of its predecessor. Samsung previously debuted this platform in its Galaxy S26 series, so for the Fold 8, it’s more about transplanting proven flagship muscle into a foldable form factor.

Unlike the Galaxy Z Flip 8, which is reportedly splitting chipset duties regionally-with Snapdragon powering units in the US, China, and Japan, and the Exynos 2600 expected in Europe, India, and South Korea-the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will use a single platform worldwide. This decision ensures consistent performance for buyers everywhere and helps Samsung avoid the customer dissatisfaction that can come with regional processor variations on a premium device.

Chip costs have been climbing for years, and Qualcomm remains a key reason premium Android phones keep getting pricier. The foldable segment is already at the high end of the price spectrum, so sticking to one flagship processor globally likely helps Samsung contain some cost discussions-especially around concerns of ”weaker” versions for certain countries. Details on the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s final price will be revealed at the July 22 event.

Samsung’s early confirmation of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 also signals a broader industry trend where foldable phones increasingly adopt the latest flagship chips first seen on traditional smartphones. Going forward, the challenge will be balancing performance gains with battery life and heat management in these complex folding designs. The upcoming Unpacked event should offer more clues on how Samsung plans to optimize this powerful hardware inside the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s foldable frame.
