Microsoft is rolling out a new recovery feature in Windows 11 called Cloud Rebuild, designed for situations where the system is so broken that a standard reset won’t cut it. The PC will download a fresh copy of the Windows 11 OS along with device-specific drivers from the internet, then perform a complete reinstall of the operating system.

This cloud-based reinstall option debuted in the experimental Windows 11 build 28120.2387. According to Microsoft, Cloud Rebuild fetches the latest Windows system image and a set of drivers tailored specifically for the device. The process fully formats the drive, erasing all user files, applications, and settings with no chance of recovery.

Two hard requirements come with Cloud Rebuild: an active internet connection is essential since the OS image must be downloaded, and the PC must be officially supported by Windows 11. This is especially relevant for older hardware, where Windows installations often bypass official requirements but lose access to certain recovery features.

Currently, Cloud Rebuild is limited to Windows Insider participants, with Microsoft promising a broader rollout in the coming weeks. While Windows already has cloud-based recovery options, this new feature is distinctly more severe-it fully reinstalls Windows 11 with complete disk wiping, rather than just performing a soft system repair.

How Windows 11’s Cloud Rebuild compares to Apple and Google recovery solutions

For comparison, Apple and Google offer cloud recovery in their respective ecosystems: macOS supports internet recovery that reinstalls the system from Apple servers, and Chrome OS can powerwash and reinstall directly from the cloud. Microsoft’s Cloud Rebuild fits this trend by providing a last-resort recovery path for Windows 11 users facing irreparable system corruption.

Future improvements for Windows 11 Cloud Rebuild

Going forward, expect Microsoft to refine Cloud Rebuild with enhanced hardware support and faster download mechanisms to rival Apple’s internet recovery. It may also raise important considerations about data backups, as the feature’s complete disk wipe leaves no room for file salvage without prior precautions.
