Yandex Go has introduced its own version of Moscow’s iconic Troika transport card, integrating essential features directly into the app. The branded Troika card is available for purchase through Yandex’s online store and marketplace. Once you have the card, linking it to your Yandex Go account is as simple as entering its 10-digit number under the ”Transport” section. From there, you can top it up using any bank card already saved in your account. The company also plans to roll out a fully virtual Troika card within the app, eliminating the need for physical plastic altogether.
How to link and top up your Troika card in Yandex Go
After linking, the app displays your Troika balance and enables topping it up instantly. However, the physical card doesn’t update its stored value immediately. To sync your balance with the card, you still need to tap it on a metro turnstile or a validator on surface transport. In the same section, users can also purchase travel passes ranging from a single day up to a full year, all priced according to the official tariffs.
Yandex Go expands from ride-hailing to daily transit payments
This move transforms Yandex Go from primarily a taxi, carsharing, and scooter app into a daily transit tool for metro and bus riders. For users, it means fewer steps between paying and traveling. For Yandex, it’s about boosting engagement with frequent, everyday transit scenarios. Unlike occasional taxi bookings, transport apps get opened multiple times weekly, often daily, increasing user retention and data potential.
The role of the Troika card in Moscow’s public transport
The Troika card itself has been a staple of Moscow’s transit system since 2013. Initially designed for metro fares, it now covers surface buses, the Moscow Central Circle (MCC), and the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD). While the ability to top up Troika cards via apps isn’t new in Russia-local banks and city services have offered this for years-Yandex’s key advantage is embedding the transit payment flow inside a widely used super-app.
Upcoming features: multiple cards management and virtual Troika card
Looking ahead, Yandex promises additional capabilities, including managing multiple Troika cards under a single user account and launching the virtual Troika card. If fully realized, this virtual card could let Yandex Go handle not just topping up your balance but directly processing fare payments in real time. That level of integration would push Yandex further into the city’s daily life, competing directly with banking ecosystems and municipal platforms for control over everyday urban transactions.
