Cosplayer Kalinka Fox, aka Kristina Fink, has brought Jade’s classic black-and-green bodysuit from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 to life-one of the most recognizable costumes in the Mortal Kombat franchise, alongside Scorpion’s yellow and Sub-Zero’s blue, now nearly three decades old.
Who is Jade in Mortal Kombat?
Jade made her debut in Mortal Kombat II (1993) as a secret character-and not an easy one to unlock. Players could only access her by winning a round using a very specific move: a low kick button-only attack. She appeared lurking in Goro’s lair and briefly in the background of the Living Forest stage. Developer John Tobias added secret fighters like Jade to deepen the series’ mystery after Reptile’s success in the original game.
She later became a fully playable character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), the very costume Kalinka Fox faithfully recreated. Since then, Jade has been a staple in the franchise.

According to Mortal Kombat lore, Jade hails from Edenia, a peaceful kingdom conquered by the villainous Shao Kahn and absorbed into Outworld. She was childhood friends with Princess Kitana. Shao Kahn exploited this bond by appointing Jade as Kitana’s personal bodyguard, secretly ordering her to kill the princess if she showed disloyalty.
The character’s moral crossroad comes in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3: when Kitana flees to Earthrealm, Shao Kahn sends Jade to capture her. Jade must choose between loyalty to the emperor or devotion to her friend. She sides with Kitana, foils Reptile’s plan, and joins the fighters of Earthrealm.

Jade’s fighting style and personality
Unlike many fighters in the Mortal Kombat roster who rely on brute force, Jade’s combat style focuses on speed and precision. Her signature weapon is a steel staff, complemented by razor-sharp boomerangs known as ”razorangs.” In the early games, she boasted a unique passive ability: immunity to projectile attacks.
Personality-wise, Jade is confident, sarcastic, and ruthless toward traitors, yet fiercely loyal to Kitana. This complex characterization sets her apart from just being a ”green palette swap” of Kitana, which was how she began.

Updates on Mortal Kombat in 2026
NetherRealm Studios recently wrapped up support for Mortal Kombat 1 with a Definitive Edition release. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 2 hit theaters in May 2026, starring Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. Jade was portrayed by Tati Gabrielle. Fans noticed her look diverged somewhat from the game’s depiction but praised how closely her role followed the established lore.
Jade’s presence as a recurring, nuanced character-with a signature fighting style and a complicated backstory-cements her place alongside the most enduring figures in the Mortal Kombat franchise. As cosplay continues to celebrate these iconic fighters, expect characters like Jade to gain even more spotlight among fans worldwide.
