Japan’s tinker-happy tuning scene has found a new victim: Toyota’s cheapest wagon, the Probox, now dressed up as a miniature homage to the classic Land Cruiser 60 Series. Goosfam’s RetroPro kit does the visual heavy lifting, adds two trim styles, and leaves the humble drivetrain untouched – which is probably the most honest part of the whole exercise.
The result is exactly the kind of retro cosplay that sells well in Japan: familiar enough to feel nostalgic, exaggerated enough to turn heads, and far cheaper than buying a real old-school Land Cruiser. It also taps into a wider trend among tuners and bodykit makers who keep recycling 1980s off-road cues for people who want the look without the fuel bill or the restoration headache.
What the RetroPro kit changes
RetroPro replaces the Probox’s plain face with a redesigned front end that includes square headlights, a new grille, a reshaped bumper with orange indicators, a flat hood, and altered front fenders. Goosfam says the package is meant to give the budget wagon the unmistakable stance of a Land Cruiser from the 1980s.
- Square headlights and a Land Cruiser-style grille
- New front bumper with orange turn signals
- Flat hood and revised front fenders
- Black five-spoke wheels and off-road tires
Two looks, same basic trick
Buyers can choose between Urban Classic, which leans hard into chrome, and LifeStyle Retro, which swaps that shine for black trim. That split is clever enough: one version is for people who want a throwback with a little swagger, the other for those who prefer their nostalgia with less jewelry.
Mechanically, nothing changes. The Probox keeps its standard 1.5-liter gasoline engine or hybrid setup, and all-wheel drive remains available. The styling sells the fantasy, but the underlying car is still a workhorse – the sort of vehicle delivery fleets and practical buyers have long favored, which makes the transformation feel even more absurd in the best way.
RetroPro kit price and July sales start
The RetroPro kit starts at 660,000 yen, or about $4,100, before paint and installation. Fully built cars will be sold through Sano Auto dealers in Japan, with the two trim versions priced as follows:
- LifeStyle Retro: 2.98 million yen, about $18,600
- Urban Classic: 3.145 million yen, about $20,000
Sales begin on 1 July.
Goosfam is not the first Japanese tuner to turn the Probox into a retro off-roader. Hakobanya previously showed a ”70 Box” inspired by the Land Cruiser 70 Series, but RetroPro goes in a different direction with its square lamps and 60 Series cues. Expect more of these mashups, not fewer – because if there is one thing the aftermarket likes as much as chrome, it is selling nostalgia by the bolt-on.
