Santa Monica Studio has pulled the curtain back on God of War: Laufey, a new PlayStation 5 exclusive that finally moves Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, to the center of the story. The pitch is simple and smart: take a character who has lingered on the edge of the main saga and make her the lead in a world of gods, dead realms, and family rescue missions.

The game’s setting, a realm called Eternity, sounds tailor-made for the series’ trademark mythological brawling. Sony also showed 20 minutes of gameplay, which is usually the part where ambition meets reality. For a franchise that has steadily broadened from brute-force spectacle into more personal storytelling, this is a tidy next step – and a reminder that PlayStation still likes to keep one heavyweight narrative series in reserve.

Faye takes over the story

According to the studio, the game will partly connect to the events of God of War (2018), with Faye trying to save Kratos and Atreus. That gives the new entry a built-in hook: the audience already knows the family, but not the person who shaped it from the shadows.

That approach fits a broader trend in big-ticket game sequels, where developers increasingly mine secondary characters instead of simply making the next louder installment. It is also a safer bet than inventing an entirely new universe, because God of War already has the mythology, fan base, and emotional baggage baked in.

What the 20-minute gameplay reveal shows

Faye’s combat kit is more agile than Kratos’s usual style: she uses a sword, can launch aerial attacks, and has access to the so-called Golden Hand of the Jotuns for combo strikes. That suggests a faster, more technical style rather than a straight reskin of the series’ familiar heavy-hit formula.

  • Weapon: sword
  • Moves: aerial attacks
  • Signature ability: Golden Hand of the Jotuns
  • Setting: Eternity, a special afterlife realm

There is also an oddly memorable sidekick: Frank, a jelly-like cosmic cube. That is either exactly the kind of weirdness God of War thrives on, or the sort of gimmick that will be mocked mercilessly if it lands wrong. Given the series’ track record, it probably earns the benefit of the doubt.

PlayStation 5 exclusivity and release date

God of War: Laufey is listed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, but Sony has not announced a release date yet. For now, the company has what it wanted: a high-profile reveal, a recognizable name, and enough footage to start the speculation machine before a date exists.

The bigger question is whether this is a one-off spin on the mythology or the start of a broader move toward character-first side stories inside Sony’s biggest franchises. If Laufey lands, expect more studio favorite characters to be promoted from lore to lead role. If it stumbles, the cube may end up getting more attention than the game.
