Vera Andreeva, known as OICHI, has once again tackled an iconic character with a cosplay that’s anything but subtle-Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. She invited fans to choose between two swimsuit designs: one revealing, the other more modest. Judging by the photos, the latter barely lives up to its ”closed” label. This bold Tifa cosplay has sparked widespread debate among fans and cosplay enthusiasts.
Who is Tifa Lockhart?
Tifa made her debut in the original Final Fantasy VII back in 1997, crafted by legendary designer Tetsuya Nomura. The New York Times once dubbed her a ”pin-up girl for the cyber generation,” drawing comparisons to Lara Croft as a strong yet alluring female figure in gaming. Three decades later, she hasn’t lost her appeal.

In the game’s lore, Tifa grew up in Nibelheim alongside Cloud Strife, her childhood friend. After Sephiroth’s destruction of their hometown, she joined the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE and opened the ”7th Heaven” bar in Midgar’s slums. When Cloud reappeared in Midgar, Tifa persuaded him to join AVALANCHE, partly to keep him close and safe.
Shy and reserved, Tifa doesn’t express her feelings openly-her last name, Lockhart, is a nod to that emotional guardedness. Still, she genuinely cares for those around her, often acting as the emotional anchor for the group.
Tifa’s combat style in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Despite her shy personality, Tifa is a powerhouse in combat. She specializes in the Zangan-ryu martial arts style, fighting barehanded with only combat gloves. In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, she boasts the fastest movement speed and ATB gauge refill compared to other characters, thriving in close-quarters melees and focusing on stacking damage while stunning enemies.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s ongoing journey in 2026

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launched on PS5 in February 2024 and racked up over 40 Game of the Year awards, along with more than 125 perfect scores from critics. The PC release followed in January 2025.
The third and final installment of the trilogy is actively in development. Director Naoki Hamaguchi shared in May 2026 that he’s played through the game over 40 times to fine-tune balance. With the script finalized and producer Yoshinori Kitase calling the project ”excellent,” fans still await the official title and release date. Hamaguchi hinted an announcement is imminent, with insiders predicting early 2027.
For international audiences, Tifa is not just a staple of Japanese RPGs but a cultural icon who helped set standards for female characters in gaming. OICHI’s daring Tifa cosplay highlights the lasting influence of this character, which rivals major stars from Western franchises. As the Final Fantasy VII saga approaches its conclusion, expect more fan tributes and evolving portrayals that reflect both nostalgia and modern sensibilities.
