Cosplayer Vera Andreeva, known as OICHI, has taken on one of the most iconic characters in fighting game history: Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters. Decked out in Mai’s signature red kimono and armed with battle fans, OICHI nails the kunoichi’s graceful yet deadly moves-something that demands more than just a costume, but a deep grasp of the character herself.
Who is Mai Shiranui?
Mai Shiranui burst onto the scene in 1992’s Fatal Fury 2 almost by accident. Originally, her spot was meant for a male character called Ninja Master, but developer SNK pivoted last minute, replacing him with Mai. Since then, she’s remained a fan favorite, consistently topping popularity polls throughout every iteration of the franchise.

In the story, Mai is the last heir of the Shiranui ninja clan, boasting a legacy that spans over 400 years. Trained in the family’s ninjutsu style from childhood by her grandfather Hanzo, her life changed when American fighter Andy Bogard arrived seeking a master. When Andy left abruptly to enter a deadly tournament, Mai swore to find him-fueling a three-decade-long pursuit across fighting stages worldwide.

Mai’s fighting style is unique among fighters: her movements blend fighting with dance-like fluidity, delivering precise and elegant attacks. Her trademark weapons are war fans-flourishing, slashing, and hurling them like deadly projectiles. She also wields fire, conjuring fiery clones, engulfing herself in flames during strikes, and unleashing walls of fire on foes.

Personality-wise, Mai is a flashy, flirtatious, and charismatic woman who balances her playful side with solemn dedication to her clan’s traditions. This contrast between her carefree exterior and deep respect for heritage is at the core of her character.

Mai’s role in The King of Fighters series
Mai transitioned to The King of Fighters series with its 1994 debut and has appeared in every main installment except one-The King of Fighters XII. She wasn’t playable in that title, despite plans to include her as DLC. The latest main installment, KOF XV (2022), brought Mai back with updated animations and enhanced combat mechanics.

Meanwhile, SNK revived the Fatal Fury series with City of the Wolves in April 2025-the first in 26 years. Mai is part of the starting roster there, portrayed as notably more mature and reserved than her earlier, more flirtatious incarnations.

OICHI isn’t new to major cosplay projects. Previously, she impressed with her official collaboration cosplay for Stellar Blade x NIKKE. Fans can explore all her work at the cosplay section of our site.
