Russian model Twine has turned heads with a striking cosplay of Mai Shiranui, the iconic ninja heiress from the Fatal Fury fighting game series. Known for her fiery fighting style and signature red kimono, Mai remains one of the most recognizable characters in fighting game history.

Who is Mai Shiranui?

Mai Shiranui made her debut in Fatal Fury 2 back in 1992 – almost by chance. Originally, SNK planned a male ninja character called ”Ninja Master,” but shortly before release, the team switched gears and reimagined the role as a woman, crafting Mai’s distinctive persona.

In the game’s lore, Mai is the last heir of the Shiranui ninja clan, which boasts a 400-year-old lineage. Her grandfather, Hanzo Shiranui, trained her in their ancestral ninjutsu style from childhood. At first, Mai wasn’t especially interested until a young American fighter, Andy Bogard, arrived in her village searching for a teacher. When Andy abruptly left for a tournament without notice, Mai vowed to track him down-fueling her relentless pursuit through subsequent fighting events.

Mai’s fighting style combines traditional ninjutsu with elements of Japanese dance, resulting in elegant, fluid moves that mask deadly efficiency. Her trademark weapons are her folding fans, which she uses not only for slashing and striking but also as projectiles. Fire control is a hallmark of her skill set, enabling her to ignite her body and clothes, create fiery clones, and unleash walls of flame on her opponents.

In the latest Fatal Fury installment, City of the Wolves, Mai has matured. SNK describes her as more composed and professional, shifting her motivation from chasing Andy Bogard to focusing on her own fighting career.

Mai Shiranui’s iconic look and cultural roots

Mai’s iconic red kimono with its plunging neckline, barely held together during fights, has become one of the most recognizable costumes in fighting games. Its minimalist yet bold design continues to attract cosplayers worldwide who strive for precision in capturing every detail.

Despite the revealing design, Mai’s character is rooted in a serious concept: she’s a guardian of cultural heritage who treats traditional rituals and her family’s fighting style with deep respect. This layer adds depth beyond her flashy appearance.

Fatal Fury revival and latest updates in 2026

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves launched on April 24, 2025, for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC – marking the series’ first new entry in 26 years since Garou: Mark of the Wolves in 1999. Mai Shiranui was part of the initial roster. The first season pass added fan favorites, including Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, and guest fighters such as Terry Bogard’s rival Ken Masters and Chun-Li from Street Fighter.

In January 2026, SNK announced a second season of downloadable content, followed by a major anniversary update slated for April 2026. The hype doesn’t stop there – a DLC featuring soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo as a playable character highlights SNK’s willingness to experiment with casting, blending gaming and pop culture in unexpected ways.

SNK’s radical revival of Fatal Fury combines nostalgia with fresh content and bold crossovers, proving that classic fighting franchises can still pack a punch in today’s competitive gaming scene. Watch for more surprises as the story unfolds, especially how Mai Shiranui’s character evolves with modern sensibilities and new gameplay mechanics.
