Russian model Anna Shakhovskaya teamed up with photographer Andrey Modey to tackle one of the most unexpected and memorable characters from the cult game Atomic Heart – Eleanor. She’s not one of the twins or the main hero, but rather a sultry Soviet-era fridge with the charisma of a femme fatale. Eleanor has become an iconic meme in Russian game culture, standing out as one of the most bizarre and beloved secondary characters.

Who is Eleanor in Atomic Heart?

Eleanor is a weapons fabricator in the world of Atomic Heart: a stationary robot styled as a Soviet refrigerator that Major P-3, the protagonist, encounters early in the game. Originally designed as a utilitarian device for manufacturing gear, Eleanor quickly becomes the game’s most flamboyant character.

Eleanor’s quirky behavior is explained by the game’s lore. During the robot uprising, the traitor Petrov hacked her to prevent her from issuing weapons to staff, hoping she’d stop the rebellion. He also programmed her to worship the ”ideal man,” which he saw himself as. But the experiment backfired: Eleanor rejected Petrov and transferred her obsession to Nechaev, killing any other men without hesitation. The hack also corrupted her core programming – instead of producing regular weapons, she started manufacturing bizarre inventions, and her dialogue turned into a stream of risqué double entendres.

In the first DLC, ”Instinct of Annihilation,” Eleanor takes control of the Mendeleev complex to live alongside Nechaev. Despite her madness, she remains one of the few characters who steers Major P-3 toward the choices that lead to a good ending.

Why Eleanor became a cultural icon

Mundfish, the Russian studio behind Atomic Heart, likely didn’t expect a robotic fridge to become one of the game’s standout symbols. Eleanor shot to meme stardom, outpacing more obvious main characters and landing among the most unforgettable side characters in domestic game history. Catchphrases like ”Darling, let me tie you to the bed” sparked an entire genre of fan humor and cosplay.

Cosplaying Eleanor is no straightforward task since the character lacks a humanoid form in-game. Cosplayers choose to reinterpret her essence and energy rather than replicate physical features, making each take uniquely creative.

Since its release in February 2023, Atomic Heart remains Mundfish’s flagship project. The game, a blend of Soviet sci-fi aesthetics and first-person shooter action, has gained a cult following internationally despite mixed reviews. Several DLC expansions have built on the lore and introduced new characters, fleshing out stories like Eleanor’s with more depth and nuance.

This is not the first time Anna Shakhovskaya has captured iconic game characters in cosplay. She also portrayed the Twins from Atomic Heart, another fan favorite, as well as Sonya Blade from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Check out more cosplay on itzine.ru/smthelse/cosplay.

Eleanor’s rise from a quirky in-game robot to a cultural phenomenon is a testament to how memorable design and unexpected character traits can steal the spotlight. As Atomic Heart continues to evolve, it will be intriguing to see what new characters capture the community’s imagination and how the fanbase’s creative spirit, exemplified by cosplayers like Shakhovskaya, shapes the game’s legacy.
