Apple’s next flagship smartwatch may finally be getting the kind of update that makes people replace the one they already own. A new report says the Apple Watch Ultra 4 will arrive with an all-new design and more sensors, a combination that could help Apple push the premium model back toward stronger sales after a relatively quiet run for the rest of the watch line.

That would mark the first major redesign for the Ultra family since the original model launched in September 2022. It also lands at an awkward time for Apple’s wearables strategy: Bloomberg said in March that the Apple Watch Series 12 would barely move the needle on features, so the Ultra may be carrying the burden of looking fresh while the mainstream lineup treads water.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 design changes

DigiTimes says the Ultra 4 will not just get a cosmetic refresh. The report describes the changes as substantial enough to lift sales by 20% to 30%, which is a bold number for a watch category that usually grows by persuasion, not miracles.

Apple has not said what the new model will look like, but a genuine redesign would make sense. Competitors such as Samsung and Huawei have spent the past few product cycles pushing wearables with brighter displays, deeper health tracking, and more distinct industrial design, while the Ultra line has leaned heavily on durability and battery life since day one.

Sensor upgrades could change health tracking

The more interesting rumor is under the hood. Apple is said to be planning ”significant sensor upgrades,” with the number of sensors set to double and power efficiency improved, which should help battery life rather than hurt it. That could mean more reliable readings for heart rate and blood oxygen saturation, though the report stops short of saying Apple is ready to launch a totally new health feature set.

There is also a hint that Apple’s blood pressure alerts in watchOS 26 could become more accurate on the Ultra 4. A true blood pressure measurement feature is apparently not expected this year, and blood glucose monitoring is still off in the distance, despite Apple’s long-running work on both.

What the Ultra 4 may add first

  • A complete redesign, according to DigiTimes
  • More sensors, with the total number expected to double
  • Better energy efficiency, which could help battery life
  • More accurate blood pressure alerts in watchOS 26

If Apple does pull this off, the Ultra 4 becomes the easy upgrade for buyers who skipped the last generation. If it doesn’t, the company risks letting its most expensive watch become the one with the most interesting rumor file and the least urgency on store shelves.
