Russian cosplayer Asami Gate takes on the role of Wonder Woman, bringing the fierce Amazon warrior from DC’s iconic universe to life. Diana Prince, known as Wonder Woman, has been one of DC’s three main pillars-alongside Batman and Superman-for over 85 years.

Who is Wonder Woman?

Wonder Woman made her comic debut in December 1941, created by psychologist William Moulton Marston and artist Harry G. Peter. Marston envisioned a superheroine who would stand apart from the typical ”bloodthirsty masculinity” saturating comics at the time: a powerful woman who triumphs through love and justice rather than brute force.

In canonical lore, Diana is the daughter of Queen Hippolyta and Zeus, raised on the hidden island of Themyscira where the Amazons have lived apart from ”man’s world” for millennia. She enters the wider world after American pilot Steve Trevor crashes on the island. To escort him back and join the fight against evil, Diana wins a contest among the Amazons, marking her entry to human affairs and war.

The character’s origin story has shifted over time. During comics’ Golden Age, Hippolyta shaped Diana from clay and the gods brought her to life. The 2011 ”New 52” reboot recast Diana as Zeus’s biological daughter-the version that heavily influences today’s films.

Wonder Woman’s powers and gear

Diana stands among the physically strongest characters in the DC universe. Her powers are divine gifts: strength from Demeter, speed from Hermes, wisdom from Athena, and combat skills from Aphrodite and Ares. According to canon, she can match Superman in battle and hold her ground against cosmic-level threats like Darkseid.

Her iconic arsenal includes:

  • The Lasso of Truth, compelling anyone ensnared to speak honestly and obey commands
  • Indestructible Aegis bracelets, which deflect bullets and other projectiles
  • Sword and shield, symbols of millennia of battle training

Wonder Woman on the big screen: from Gal Gadot to DC’s reboot

The first feature-length Wonder Woman film landed in 2017, directed by Patty Jenkins with Gal Gadot starring. Set during World War I, it stood out in the DCEU-dominated by darker tones-as one of the rare critical and commercial hits, praised for its clarity and emotional depth. Its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, was less successful and failed to impress at the box office.

DC is currently rebooting its universe under James Gunn’s leadership. Gal Gadot will not return as Diana; a new actress will take the mantle in the revamped DCU. Gunn confirmed in June 2025 that a script is underway, penned by Ana Nogueira. As of early 2026, casting hasn’t begun-Gunn emphasized that actor discussions start only after the script is complete. Meanwhile, HBO is developing a prequel series, Paradise Lost, exploring Themyscira’s history before Diana’s birth.

DC’s Wonder Woman is a cultural icon that continues to inspire creative interpretations worldwide-from Hollywood blockbusters to passionate cosplay communities. As the DCU reset unfolds, fans eagerly await how the character’s enduring legacy will reshape on screen and off. Whether the new take can capture Wonder Woman’s unique blend of strength and compassion remains a key question for 2026 and beyond.
