Oppo is reportedly developing an unusual phone called the Reno X that aims to sit between traditional smartphones and foldables without actually folding.
According to insider Digital Chat Station, a prototype is already in the works featuring a design that ditches the flexible screen in favor of a wider display format.
Oppo Reno X’s unique wide display design
The Reno X is expected to sport a 6.39-inch screen with an unusual resolution around 21xx×13xx pixels and an aspect ratio close to 16:10.
This makes the screen significantly wider than typical tall and narrow smartphones, designed to mimic the experience of a foldable device-but without hinges or a flexible panel.

Oppo Reno X specs and hardware rumors
Inside, Oppo appears to be packing a flagship MediaTek Dimensity 9000-series processor paired with a hefty 7,000mAh battery-giant by today’s smartphone standards.
The camera setup reportedly includes:
- 50MP main sensor
- Periscope telephoto lens
- A third unspecified camera module
Oppo Reno X positioning and expected launch
Oppo is likely to unveil the Reno X alongside its upcoming Find X10 flagship line rather than under the Reno 16 family, signaling a new direction for the Reno series.
This ”wide phone instead of a foldable” concept appears to be Oppo’s attempt to offer a more affordable alternative to premium foldables from companies like Samsung and Huawei, which still command hefty price tags due to complex hinge and flexible screen technology.
In global markets, foldable smartphones have been growing but remain a niche due to their delicate mechanics and high cost. Oppo’s approach could appeal to users wanting some of the expansive real estate of a foldable screen without the fragility and expense.
While the Reno X is still a prototype and specs may shift, it raises an interesting question: can a wider, pseudo-foldable screen deliver enough of the foldable experience to attract users? Oppo’s design gamble could carve out a new segment between slab phones and foldables-and if it works, other brands might follow suit.
