Microsoft is reportedly considering pushing back the release of Fable to steer clear of launching too close to Grand Theft Auto 6, which is scheduled for November 19, 2026. The move comes amid worries that GTA 6’s massive hype could overshadow Xbox’s upcoming RPG from Playground Games.
Fable was officially unveiled two months ago, with an anticipated release window set for fall 2026. The broad timeframe was likely intentional, allowing Microsoft flexibility to adjust the date based on GTA 6’s launch plans, according to Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb.
Grubb reveals that ”within the company, there’s talk of shifting Fable’s release. That doesn’t guarantee the game will come out next year, but the team is still aiming for a 2026 launch. However, there’s concern that if Fable drops too close to GTA 6, the release might be pushed into December – which could open the door for a 2027 delay.”
This puts the fate of Fable in a delicate spot despite a robust Xbox release schedule planned for 2026. Microsoft wants to avoid its flagship RPG competing for the spotlight with what’s expected to be one of the biggest game launches in years.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to be one of the most anticipated launches in years, expected to dominate gamers’ attention worldwide. As a result, several developers are holding back on confirming exact release dates until Rockstar clarifies its schedule.
The second half of 2026 currently looks light on major game releases. Between Marvel’s Wolverine arriving in September and GTA 6 hitting shelves on November 19, only a handful of titles-including Epic Mickey and SpongeBob games for Nintendo Switch in October-are confirmed.
In February, Xbox and Playground Games shared a detailed look at Fable, confirming that the RPG will launch on Xbox consoles, PC (including Steam), and even PlayStation 5-a rare cross-platform move for a Microsoft-published title.
Fable’s director Ralph Fulton said, ”This is Playground Games’ first open-world RPG, and we’re proud to carry on the legacy of Lionhead Studios, creators of the original series. While this is a fresh start for Fable, we aim to keep the spirit of the beloved classic trilogy alive.”
Compared to industry giants like Rockstar and Ubisoft, Playground Games is still establishing its RPG credentials beyond its acclaimed Forza Horizon racing series. Microsoft’s hesitation to finalize Fable’s date highlights the fierce competition for player attention in the crowded fall release window, especially when GTA 6 stands to dominate sales and conversations globally.
What remains to be seen is whether Microsoft will firm up a new release date for Fable soon or opt to hold it as a potential 2027 holiday title. This decision will reveal a lot about how Microsoft prioritizes its major IPs amidst some of gaming’s most monumental launches in recent memory.
